When was the last time you consumed processed food? The clear fact is that many families do not incorporate enough whole foods into their normal diets, contributing to negative consequences such as weight gain and some diseases. Processed foods can be defined as foods that have been chemically processed or that has added preservatives, packed for convenience and sold to consumers for inexpensive prices.

Sugar or high-fructose corn syrup
Many processed foods contain significantly large amounts of sugar and high-fructose corn syrups, giving them that irresistible, sweet taste. However, the constant consumption of these foods can have detrimental effects on one’s health.
Regardless of the source of energy sugar supplies to the body, it doesn’t give much of what your body actually needs, such as nutrients. Consequently, excessive sugar can cause insulin resistance, high cholesterol, and high levels of triglycerides, associated with diabetes, heart disease and cancer.
Refined carbohydrates
Carbohydrates are essential for a healthy diet, however too much refined “simple” carbs found in processed foods, leads to a spike in blood sugar and insulin levels.
Whole food carbs include fruits, vegetables, legumes and whole grains, which are low to moderate in calorie density and full of natural fiber, helping to curb hunger and keep blood sugar levels in check.
Trans fats
High levels of trans fats are often found in processed foods, especially in vegetable fats such as oils and in margarine. These have been linked to an increased risk of heart disease, making it a product that has no beneficial value to the body. Instead, opt for more wholesome products such as olive oil or butter.
Low levels of fiber
Typically processed foods are low in fiber, which can be lost or removed during processing, depriving the body of its benefits, especially in digestion. Fiber decreases the rate at which carbs are processed in our bodies, which can help us to feel fuller and satisfied for longer.
We all know how difficult it can be to avoid processed foods, due to its convenience, cost, and taste. Despite this, processed foods do more damage than good, and so should only be consumed in moderation. Cutting down on these foods will significantly increase healthy habits and overall improve an individual’s quality of life.
