This video explains some truths and myths about coffee so that you can make an informed choice when you lift that cup.

Many students are hooked on to coffee or other energy drinks to stay awake at night. There are many people who say that they can’t get out of bed without their cup of coffee. These people essentially mean that they need this external stimulator to jolt them out of sleep. Many people feel coffee will help them reduce fat… Here is the reality check :

How does coffee work??

Coffee has caffeine in it. Chemical composition of caffeine is similar to a neuro transmitter “Adenosine” in your body. The purpose of Adenosine is to keep you alert and active during working hours. Concentration of Adenosine is highest in body during morning and it gradually drops with day. It reaches its lowest at night, so as to put you to sleep along with melatonin which is another sleep hormone. Thus caffeine can fool your body to be as Adenosine and can enter the Adenosine pathway.

So when you wake up , if the adenosine in your body is not sufficient to make you alert and active, drinking coffee does that job. But the difference is while adenosine is your natural stimulator , caffeine is an external stimulator. Drinking coffee everyday makes your body further incapable of using its natural stimulator ie adenosine and will always depend on caffeine as external stimulator to wake you up and to keep you alert while working.. and you become dependent on caffeine. Most people think coffee to be harmless, but caffeine in coffee is a psychoanalytic drug which makes you addictive. Caffeine addictive-ness is equally harmful to your health like any other drug.

How to overcome dependence on external stimulator like Coffee ?

You need to find a reason for why you can’t get up without an external stimulator or why do you feel low on energy during the day, that you would need coffee to charge you up. Without finding the reason if you just keep killing your fatigue with coffee, it will hit you in other ways. You need to be working on the reasons of your fatigue.. like sleeping early to wake up on time naturally or bringing those changes in lifestyle that will keep up the adenosine levels to keep you alert in office or college. Some of those lifestyle changes are eating on time, eating good healthy home made food, and exercising etc. I have talked about these lifestyle changes a lot in my previous videos . Does Coffee Burns Fat?

Caffeine does improve your fat mobilisation, so you burn fat faster and it helps you to lift more weight in gym as well. But this is only half the picture…… Caffeine actually messes up with your sleep cycle. If you drink coffee anytime after 3 pm it remains in your system for long enough time to disturb your normal sleeping pattern at night. Your quality of sleep will not be as good as it would be without any caffeine in your system. And when you don’t sleep well… you increase your fat deposition. So you are beating the very purpose of drinking coffee if it is for fat burning.

What are other Side Effects of Coffee?

If you are suffering with thyroid hormone issues or adrenal hormonal dis-balance then drinking coffee will further mess it up. Caffeine raises your cortisol levels and more cortisol is read as stress by body and body deposits fats with high cortisol. So if you are someone who is already dealing with hormonal issues, do not have coffee for that one benefit of Fat Loss .. its not worth it.

What should be done?

Addiction of any kind is not good for your health be it coffee or any other drug. Look for other ways to fight your fatigue.. like take a short walk, exercise regularly, eat on time and most importantly have a good sleep at night. You can of course have it occasionally and enjoy it, as long as you don’t get addicted to it. Moderation and not restriction is the mantra to enjoy and stay healthy .
