Chung Cake - Preparations for Tet, Vietnamese New Year

Tết – Vietnamese New Year, Vietnamese Lunar New Year or Tet Holiday, is the most important celebration in Vietnamese culture. Tết celebrates the arrival of spring based on the Vietnamese calendar, which usually has the date falling in January or February in the Gregorian calendar.
Vietnamese people celebrate the Lunar New Year annually, which is based on a lunisolar calendar (calculating both the motions of Earth around the Sun and of the Moon around Earth)
Many Vietnamese prepare for Tết by cooking special holiday food and cleaning the house. These foods include bánh chưng (chung cake – square cake), bánh dày (day cake), dried young bamboo soup (canh măng), giò, and sticky rice.

This video is how to prepare and make chung cake in an old vietnamese village. Chung cake – the soul of Vietnamese New Year, is a traditional Vietnamese rice cake which is made from glutinous rice, mung beans, pork and other ingredients. Its origin is told by the legend of Lang Liêu, a prince of the last king of the Sixth Hùng Dynasty, who became the successor thanks to his creation of chung cake which symbolized, respectively, the Earth. Considered an essential element of the family altar on the occasion of tết, the making and eating of chung cake during this time is a well-preserved tradition of Vietnamese people. Beside the tết holiday, chung cake is also eaten all year round as Vietnamese cuisine.

Tết is also an occasion for pilgrims and family reunions. They start forgetting about the troubles of the past year and hope for a better upcoming year.
