Hello Everyone! My article on Stress was recently featured in Best Self Magazine. One of the supplements I mention within that article is 5HTP. Many of my patients present to me wanting to avoid medications for depression and anxiety. They want to try something more natural first. So today, let’s discuss 5HTP for anxiety and depression relief.
It’s been estimated that anxiety disorders affect 1 million Americans.
It’s been estimated that depression affects 300 million people around the world, according to the World Health Organization. It affects 2 million adults in the United States—equaling 6.7percent of all adults in the country.
Living in Iowa with our bad winters many of my patients also experience seasonal affective disorder (SAD). Six percent of the US population, primarily in northern climates, is affected by SAD in its most marked form. Another 14 percent of the adult US population suffers from a lesser form of seasonal mood changes, known as winter blues.
Various lifestyle interventions can help these conditions like counseling, exercise, YOGA, deep breathing and even avoiding your food sensitivities. Why?
Your neurotransmitters are made in your gut. If you have lots of gut inflammation due to these sensitivities you can’t make neurotransmitters like serotonin and therefore you may be feeling like you need a boost from medication or supplements.
There is absolutely a time and place for medication use, especially in serious situations; but again if you are looking for another option to try, consider the use of Vitamin D, omega 3s, and 5HTP!
5HTP for anxiety and depression relief.
5HTP is an amino acid extracted naturally from the seed of the African plant Griffonia simplicifolia. It’s a precursor to serotonin. It helps to calm the central nervous system: reduces anxiety and promotes both a healthy mental outlook and better sleep.
Typically the dose is 100 mg. I recommend patients take it at night as serotonin converts to melatonin which can improve sleep. I don’t want to make patients with depression more tired during the day. However, some individuals with anxiety may choose to take it during the day to calm them down.
Remember amino acids come from protein, so if you are suffering from anxiety or depression examine your diet to verify you are getting the building blocks necessary to make what you need to feel your best!
