Prison guard sentenced for shanking South Carolina inmate


A prison guard in South Carolina received his own 7-year sentence after pleading guilty to repeatedly stabbing an inmate who damaged a light fixture in his cell with a shank, officials said Wednesday.

In 2016, Jarrell Boyan, 29, was working as a lieutenant at the Kirkland Correction Institute in Columbia when the inmate broke the light fixture in his cell, according to a press release from the US Attorney’s Office in South Carolina.

Boyan — the ranking officer at the scene — directed other corrections officers to help inspect the cell and restrain the inmate, identified as Kenya Spry, 33, by The State newspaper.

Surveillance video from the prison’s hallway reportedly shows Boyan and two other guards storm the cell as Spry resisted, the press release reads.

The guards used force to remove Spry from his cell and restrain him with handcuffs in the hallway — where he was searched. The guards found a shank the inmate had hidden and safely secured it away from the prisoner.

The guards then tried to direct Spry back into his cell, using additional force, officials said.

Boyan then leaves the cell and pockets the handmade knife, before returning to stab the prisoner four times while the two other officers watched — out of view of the surveillance camera.

The victim suffered puncture wounds to his kidney and liver, officials said.

Boyan then wrote a false report of the incident and ordered the two other guards to also file false reports.

Spry, however, has a history of violence and threats towards law enforcement, The State reported.

Spry’s inmate records show that he has a history of disciplinary action for assaults on law enforcement, throwing bodily fluid and two escape attempts.

Bryan Stirling, Director of the South Carolina Department of Corrections, praised the FBI and US Attorney’s office for bringing the officer to justice.

“When a corrections officer breaks the public trust, they must be held accountable for their actions,” Stirling said in the release.
