The countries where rich people can hunt endangered animals

I ran into some Americans having an issue at customs at the airport in Lusaka, Zambia, last summer.

Craig and Amy (last names withheld), from Western Michigan, and two friends were in the country to go hunting and were stuck at customs until the rifles and crossbows they brought from home were cleared.

“We won this trip at a hunting conference,” Amy said. “My husband bid on a hyena — they’re cheap — so we’re here.” The couple with Amy had paid just $3,000 to kill a hippopotamus (“but then there’s the fees, regulations and shipping — so it really adds up!”). The group of four were off for a trek into the remote interior of Zambia.

It wasn’t their first time hunting in Africa.

“Our trophy room is full,” Amy laughed. “It’s becoming ridiculous. And then a friend of ours died and so all of his trophies are in our garage. I want Craig to stop but … (hunting) is addictive. We have no room (for the taxidermy).”

While Amy was along for the ride — “I’m a vegetarian from Brooklyn and I won’t hunt what I can’t eat so I’m out” — Craig had “won” the right to kill a hyena, even though the couple wouldn’t take the body.

“We won’t take the hyena back,” Amy said. “Also, it’s not edible for the villagers, so it’s just gonna die.”

While that cackling scavenger is fair game, there is one creature Craig won’t shoot.

“My sons told my husband no elephants — if you shoot an elephant we will never talk to you again,” Amy said. “I don’t know if they would (not talk to him) but there’s something about elephants so … no elephants.”

“Hunting is good for the community!” Craig insisted, as several tourists looked disdainfully at the hunting group.

Woman trying to get her husband’s Crossbow through Zambian custom.

Groups like Amy and Craig’s have become exceedingly unpopular with other tourists since 2015 when Zimbabwe’s famed Cecil the lion was lured out of a national park to be shot by a dentist from Minnesota. It was later found Cecil suffered “incredible cruelty” during a drawn-out death that took as long as 12 hours.

Craig and Amy were unapologetic about their hobby

“It brings money into local communities, the meat feeds them and it helps overpopulation,” Craig said — echoing an argument the Botswana government used last year when it brought back big game hunting to the country.

Typically, animals like giraffe, zebra, antelope and warthog are eaten by villagers, however, hippo and buffalo will be consumed as well. Large cats and hyena are not usually on the menu.

In May last year, Botswana President Mokgweetsi Masisi, announced the country would lift the hunting moratorium and issue “fewer than 400” licenses for elephant hunts annually to “control herd numbers, reduce human-elephant conflict and create jobs in areas where opportunities are scarce.” The decree came as the World Wildlife Fund, listed the African elephants as vulnerable.

This week, the Safari Club International held its annual hunting convention in Reno, Nevada — including an online auction to hunt with Donald Trump Jr. in Alaska, as well as bids to shoot leopards, elephants and other endangered animals – enraging animal activists.

“This annual event is the largest meeting in the world of people who celebrate the senseless killing, buying and selling of dead animals for bragging rights,” said Kitty Block, president and CEO of the Humane Society of the United States, in a statement. “As our planet suffers an extinction crisis, it is business as usual for the trophy hunting industry and SCI, who continue to revel in spending millions of dollars every year to destroy imperiled wildlife.”

While hunting proponents claim funds are necessary in these countries and it provides employment and food for locals, there is no actual evidence locals see much of the proceeds from, say, a $50,000 elephant hunt — most of the money goes to government fees or safari outfitters.

Eddie, a Zambian and one of my guides at the Robin Pope Walking Safaris camp I stayed at, used to be a driver for a hunting safari and told me he got paid $60 a trip — averaging one trip a month. “They never tipped,” he said.

According to salary explorer, the average salary for Zambians ranges from $68 to $2225 a month (those living outside the capital, Lusaka, make less).

But despite the outrage, every animal is still available to put in the crosshairs — for a price. Zambia and Botswana aren’t the only countries where hunting animals featured on the vulnerable and endangered list are legal. Here are the other African countries where people can fulfill their Teddy Roosevelt and Ernest Hemingway-esque dreams, killing African elephants, endangered forest elephants, lions, cheetahs, leopards, rhinoceros, hippos, buffalos, lions, cheetahs and wild dogs.

Lion being hunted in Africa

The 13 countries where rich people hunt endangered animals

“Elephant hunting in Zambia is allowed. Lions and leopards are hunted with bait and can be found in almost all areas. As in Zimbabwe, leopards in Zambia are known for their large size,” according to Hunting Agent Also available are: “Livingstone’s eland, Lichtenstein’s hartebeest, greater kudu, bohor reedbuck, sitatunga, tsessebe, common waterbuck, defassa waterbuck, blue wildebeest, Chobe bushbuck, impala, klipspringer, puku, oribi, Sharpe’s grysbok, warthog, bushpig, common duiker, hippos and crocodiles are abundant in most of the rivers and can also be hunted.”

Despite suffering from severe over poaching, Mozambique has some hunting for four of the big five: lion, leopard, buffalo and elephant, with the rhino off-limits, according to The Big Game Hunting blog. The population of cape buffalo, estimated at over 50,000, are particularly healthy, according to the blog. The African Wildlife Federation claims over half of the country’s wildlife as gone forever.

If you shell out $25,000, you can hunt a variety of animals including, lion, buffalo, leopard, elephant, sable, kudu, roan, eland, hippopotamus, crocodile, Lichtenstein’s hartebeest, defassa waterbuck, zebra, southern reedbuck, warthog, oribi, bushpig, common duiker, impala, hyena and jackals, according to According to Diana Hunting Tours.

Cameroon and Central African Republic
Trek into the Congo Basin and hunt the rare Bongo and the vulnerable forest elephant with Diana Hunting Tours for a mere $34,000.

On Friday Botswana held an elephant hunting auction — the first since lifting the ban last year.

“Seven packages of 10 elephants each are on offer and the auction will take place in the capital Gaborone on Friday afternoon,” according to the BBC. “The bidders — who must be companies registered in Botswana — are expected to put down a refundable deposit of 200,000 pula ($18,000).” Other animals can be hunted on privately owned game farms.

To help combat elephant-related deaths in a safe, non-hunting way, groups like Natural Selection — which admit there is a problem with wildlife-human encounters — just launched Elephant Express, where minivans that “will be available through the ‘elephant highways’” to transport children in the Okavango Delta area to school and deliver clinic patients safely to their destination.

National parks don’t allow hunting — it is relegated to state, private or communal lands which surround the parks. However, as we saw with Cecil the Lion, once an animal is lured out of a park, it can be fair game. A permit for almost any animal can be obtained in Zimbabwe.

According to African Hunting Safaris, “Namibia, along with South Africa, are the only two countries in Africa where one can hunt the entire big five; lion, leopard, buffalo, elephant and rhino (white as well as black rhinoceros). … Cheetah can be found throughout Namibia and can also be hunted.”

South Africa
In South Africa, the laws are basically, if you own the land, you own the animals on the land. While canned hunts have been shut down, if an animal is on private land, with the owner’s permission, you can shoot it, iIncluding rhino, lion and other endangered species. There are some rules, however, and you can’t shoot a tranquilized animal or if it has been caught in a leg trap.

Benin and Burkina Faso
According to Africa Hunting, these West African countries are “home to a dense animal population including many rare and highly regarded species such as the western roan antelope.” West African savannah buffalo are also a plentiful attraction for hunters, and lion hunting in Benin is popular.

Ethiopia and Uganda also offer hunting for exotic species with a very limited distribution like bongo, giant eland and mountain nyala.

The brand new iPhone 11 fashions launch within the tail finish of Apple’s fiscal yr, which closes on Sept. 28.

By all accounts,

is anticipated to have one other dud yr of iPhone gross sales. Satirically, which will work out nicely for the corporate as its three new telephones hit shops on Friday.

The brand new iPhone 11 fashions launch within the tail finish of Apple’s fiscal yr, which closes on Sept. 28. That largely hews to the corporate’s regular sample, although Apple has tweaked that barely over the previous two years by launching one in every of its new telephones a bit later within the fall season. Regardless, Apple’s fiscal calendar typically traces up nicely with its greatest product, which means the brand new iPhones will anchor the corporate’s efficiency for the 2020 fiscal yr.

Wall Avenue’s targets for that yr are modest—to say the least. Income from iPhones is anticipated to fall by 1.5% from the $141.5 billion projected for the present yr, in response to FactSet. And the present yr’s estimates characterize a drop of 15.1% from final yr. These official estimates haven’t budged since Apple unveiled the brand new telephones final week, which makes for an unprecedented stoop for the enduring smartphone; iPhone revenues haven’t fallen two years in a row because the system first hit the market 12 years in the past.

Set towards such lowball targets, although, the brand new iPhones might pack a small shock. Demand within the firm’s pre-sale window over the previous week seems robust, as evidenced by cargo instances on a number of fashions which have already been pushed out to the center of subsequent month. Jeff Kvaal of Nomura Instinet notes that pre-sale information for the iPhone 11 fashions is monitoring forward of final yr’s launches. The brand new fashions have drawn robust critiques, notably for his or her prolonged battery life and the Professional model’s triple-camera setup.

The truth that iPhone customers are holding on to their telephones for longer intervals can also work in Apple’s favor this time. The newest model of the corporate’s iOS cell working system, additionally launched this week, is the primary that received’t work on the iPhone 6. That blockbuster system launched 5 years in the past and sparked Apple’s largest gross sales cycle so far, with iPhone shipments surging 37% in fiscal 2015 to greater than 231 million items. A lot of these patrons have doubtless already upgraded, however the massive preliminary base has additionally doubtless left a large variety of stragglers that may now have little selection however to improve or persist with outdated software program.

Most of Wall Avenue expects the iPhone 11 to largely act as a placeholder for the enterprise till Apple can launch a revved-up 5G system subsequent yr. Apple has been burned by “supercycle” hopes earlier than, although. Against this, the most recent telephones appear to have a bar that’s simple to clear.

From night time capturing mode to ultra-wide lenses, Apple’s newest iPhones have a bunch of recent digicam methods. Period tracking apps reportedly sharing sensitive data with Facebook

Period-tracking apps used by millions of women are sharing information about their sex lives and health with Facebook, a new study revealed.

Researchers with the advocacy group Privacy International published a report Monday that found two period-tracking apps, MIA Fem and Maya, sent data regarding users’ health to the social media giant.

“When Maya asks you to enter how you feel and offers suggestions of symptoms you might have — suggestions like blood pressure, swelling or acne — one would hope this data would be treated with extra care,” the study said. “But no, that information is shared with Facebook.”

Both Maya and MIA Fem have sent information on users’ contraception, the timing of their periods, symptoms during cycles and even the last time they had sex, to Facebook through the social media giant’s Software Development Kit, which helps the site target ads, according to the study.

But Maya’s parent company, Plackal Tech, has denied that any personally identifiable or medical data gets funneled to Facebook.

The company said the app, which has more than 5 million Google Play store downloads, uses the Software Development Kit to “earn revenue by displaying ads that our users can opt out of by subscribing to Maya’s premium subscription,” the advocacy group reported.

MIA Fem — which has more than 1 million users — didn’t immediately respond to request for comment.

In response to the study’s findings, Facebook said that it prohibits app developers from sharing customer data about health, finances or “other categories of sensitive information.”

“We have systems in place to detect and delete certain types of data such as Social Security Numbers, passwords, and other personal data, such as email or phone number,” a Facebook spokesperson told Privacy International. “We have begun looking at ways to improve our system and products to detect and filter out more types of potentially sensitive data.”

Black man hooked up to IV busted by cops who said he was stealing equipment: complaint

A black hospital patient in Illinois says he was arrested while on a walk last month after police claimed he was trying to steal the IV that was hooked up to his arm to sell it online.

Shaquille Dukes, 24, claims he was being treated for pneumonia at the Freeport Health Network Memorial Hospital in Freeport on June 9 when he went outside after “receiving doctors orders to walk around.”

During his walk, he said he encountered “an overzealous, racist, security officer, who claimed that I ‘was trying to leave the hospital to sell the IV equipment on eBay,’” according to a June 17 Facebook post he wrote of the incident.

Dukes said the security guard called the police to the hospital. When they arrived, the officers arrested Dukes’s brother, who was with him at the time, before arresting Dukes.

The officers, according to Dukes, said he was “being arrested for attempted theft, of the IV equipment that was clearly attached to my arm.”

He added, “officers stood by and watched while my IV was removed on the sidewalk, and it was NOT by a doctor.”

The man alleges that when he told authorities he was being treated for pneumonia and asthma, an officer said to him, “I don’t care why you’re here, you’re going to jail,” and proceeded to transport him.

During that time, Dukes claims the officers took his inhaler and that he suffered a seizure and an asthma attack. He said he “pleaded with officers for almost 4 minutes to retrieve my inhaler” before he became unresponsive, eventually getting his inhaler.

But the Freeport Police Department said a different series of events unfolded on June 9. In a news release posted June 18, the department said an officer was requested by a security guard to the scene, and three people were arrested and charged with disorderly conduct after a verbal dispute with the security guard.

“Several social media posts have since been created which contain inaccurate information regarding the incident and departmental response. In one of the social media posts, an individual wrote ‘officers stood by and watched while my IV was removed on the sidewalk, and it was NOT by a doctor,’” police wrote.

“This statement is misleading, as the IV was removed at the request of the subject by FHN medical personnel (not security or police).”

The police department told ABC News that per their investigation, “at no time did any doctor or nurse give that patient or any patient permission to leave the hospital while still hooked to an IV machine.”

“It was determined that he was likely not trying to steal any of the property,” Freeport Police Chief Todd Barkalow told the news outlet. “But the charges were supported for disorderly conduct with their actions toward the security guard.”

Dukes, his brother and a third person were arrested and charged with misdemeanor disorderly conduct. Two of those involved were also charged with misdemeanor resisting or obstructing a peace officer, police said.

Dukes said he’s filed a complaint with the city, and according to his Facebook post, is working with an attorney.
