Why Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving aren’t traveling with Nets

[ad_1]

WASHINGTON — Neither Kevin Durant nor Kyrie Irving are going to play a second for the Nets the rest of the season. They won’t score a point or grab a rebound or take a charge. But it doesn’t mean they can’t have an impact.

Durant hasn’t been traveling with the Nets on road games, and neither has Irving since getting hurt on a West Coast road trip in November. Kenny Atkinson — who insists there’s no danger of detachment from the team — said that’s not going to change as long as their rehab is better served at home. But he said that could change eventually.

“No, we’re around them enough. I always hark back to the priority’s got to be what’s best for them from a rehab standpoint. That overrides everything,” Atkinson said. “And sometimes they want to come, and we’re like ‘No, you need to be on the AlterG at home.’

“We just can’t provide the same type of rehab conditions on the road, and that’s priority number one. I think we’ll continue to do that. But I think in the future you’ll see that change as the rehab processes get further down the road.”

Durant is expected to miss the entire season after Achilles surgery in June, while Irving’s has been cut short after just 20 appearances. He opted last week for season-ending shoulder surgery which still hasn’t been scheduled.

When Steph Curry was cleared to start traveling with Golden State last month, both coach Steve Kerr and his teammates lauded the impact he had just being around the team and in huddles.

Considering the way the Nets gush over Irving and Durant’s basketball IQs, it would stand to reason they would get similar benefits from their stars’ being present. Their next road trip after the one they’re currently on includes a March 12 visit to Golden State.

“I’m not going to give you any timetable. It’s just when we can afford them and say well, we can do the same thing on the road rehab-wise,” Atkinson said. “I know those guys would be thrilled. We’d be thrilled to have them come. It’s an advantage and we can be around those guys. It’s better for us, better for the organization.”

The Nets saw their lead on No. 8 Orlando for the seventh seed sliced to just a half game with Wednesday’s 110-106 loss to the Wizards. Avoiding that spot — and a first-round matchup with NBA-leading Milwaukee — is paramount. And with just 25 games left on the slate, the scoreboard-watching has started.

“Of course we look at it. That’s the goal. We want to make the playoffs. We let a couple slip. But we’ll get back on the right track,” said Caris LeVert, who admitted to a sense of urgency. “Absolutely. I feel like that’s a great opportunity for us to get another win, a road win. So be excited for it.”

Since going back in the starting lineup nine games ago, LeVert has averaged 23.9 points, 5.3 assists, 4.3 boards and 2.3 steals.

Wilson Chandler missed Wednesday’s game because of a personal issue, but it isn’t expected to keep him out for long.

Nets blow late lead in crushing overtime loss to 76ers

[ad_1]

PHILADELPHIA — First the Nets lost their star, then they lost a heartbreaker.

Hours after Kyrie Irving elected for season-ending shoulder surgery, the Nets blew what would’ve been their best win of the season, squandering a late lead in a 112-104 overtime loss Thursday to the 76ers.

It was a crushing way to come out of the All-Star break for the Nets (25-29), who had won four of five since Irving went down with a knee injury. Now, he will miss the entire rest of the season because of shoulder surgery.

The Sixers bounced the Nets out of the 2019 playoffs and dominated in three games this season. Yet despite the usual dominance by Joel Embiid, the Nets had rallied from an early 16-point hole to lead 101-95 with 2:16 left in regulation.

It was a lead they couldn’t hold. They let the Sixers close on an 8-2 run and got blocked at the buzzer in regulation to send the game into overtime. That’s when Philadelphia wrested the game away.

Spencer Dinwiddie (22 points, game-high eight assists) made the second of two free throws to break the ice. But Alec Burks converted a three-point play on the other end to put Philadelphia up by a deuce, then Dinwiddie and Caris LeVert (team-high 25 points, six rebounds) turned the ball over on consecutive possessions.

Shake Milton’s drive pushed the Sixers’ lead to 108-104, and Burks’ 16-foot jumper made it a half-dozen. Kenny Atkinson called a timeout with 1:32 left, but the damage was done.

DeAndre Jordan had 14 points and 15 boards off the bench to spell an ineffective Jarrett Allen. The young Nets center was utterly dominated by Embiid, who had 11 of his game-high 39 points in the first five minutes to put the Nets in a 20-4 hole.

Long Island native Tobias Harris added 22 for the Sixers, who are 35-21.

“Tremendous respect. They’ve dominated us for three games,” Atkinson said beforehand. “We had a shot to beat them last game, some regrets there. Listen, Brett [Brown] has done a fantastic job. I wouldn’t want to play them in the playoffs. They’re better than they were last year.”

The Sixers improved to 26-2 at home.

After watching Allen get worked by Embiid, Atkinson pulled his young center and put in Jordan. The bruising veteran’s impact standing toe to toe with Embiid was clear and immediate. The Nets promptly ripped off a 24-6 spurt to take a two-point lead on Wilson Chandler’s 3-pointer.

The extended run reached 40-10 by the time Allen checked back in with 5:42 in the half. And when Joe Harris took a Taurean Prince feed for a driving layup, Brooklyn had padded the cushion to 50-30. The Sixers called a timeout and were showered with boos from the home crowd, who have gotten spoiled by success.

But this was never going to be that easy. Philadelphia cut the lead in half at 52-42 by the break and erased it altogether by the time Milton converted a three-point play for a 76-75 lead. A missed 3 by LeVert led to a fast-break layup by Furkan Korkmaz, and an 83-78 Philadelphia edge with 9:50 to play.

The Nets pulled even at 89-, 91- and 93-all. And after briefly taking a six-point lead, they flushed it and got sent into overtime when Chandler was blocked by Embiid.

Mitchell Robinson shows Knicks Clint Capela potential vs. Hawks

[ad_1]

ATLANTA — The Hawks just obtained Clint Capela in a trade-deadline deal. While he is still injured, “The Next Capela” dominated the court at State Farm Arena Sunday despite the Knicks’ 140-135 double-overtime heartbreaker to the Hawks.

Knicks center Mitchell Robinson was sensational — a massive force at the rim on both ends, notching 15 points with 11 rebounds, three blocks and three steals.

When Robinson was drafted in the second round in 2018, former Knicks coach David Fizdale said Robinson had Capela potential. It looks like he might have more than that and it’s a shame he was left out of the Rising Stars All-Star Game for rookies and sophomores.

“I don’t really watch him,’’ Robinson said of Capela. “We do the same thing. He’s all right, but I think I’m better on defense.’’

Robinson owed his spectacular showing to his mentor Taj Gibson, who told him before the two-game road trip he needed to be more fiery.

Mitchell Robinson

“Taj talked to me to play with a little more force,’’ Robinson said. “I kind of did that in Detroit and I brought it down to Atlanta with me. I played even harder tonight even with the back-to-back being tired. I had to push through.’’

This wasn’t even about Robinson’s alley-oops. Any pass thrown to him near the basket, he muscled in for a dunk.

“He was great,’’ Julius Randle said. “He was great. Doing what Mitchell does. That’s what makes him special, defending the rim, getting offensive rebounds, running the floor, creating extra possessions. He was amazing.”

One of his best plays was nullified controversially in the fourth quarter when he ripped the ball from D’Andre Hunter underneath and dunked it. (Officials ruled a timeout was called from the bench before Robinson stole it.)

“How can they call a timeout?’’ Robinson said. “It was crazy. The ball was already in my hands. It was already through the net.”

After the game, ex-Knick shot-blocker extraordinaire Dikembe Mutombo walked by the locker room and said, “There’s no shot-blockers in the league anymore.’’ When a reporter asked Robinson about Mutombo, he said, “Yeah, he’s good.’’

“[Robinson] was outstanding,’’ Knicks interim coach Mike Miller said. “His offensive numbers look good but his defense, the way he impacted the game, what he did along that backline was terrific.’’

No. 1 Baylor beats Oklahoma State 78-70 for 20th win in row

[ad_1]

No. 1 Baylor’s school-record winning streak has reached 20 games

WACO, Texas —
MaCio Teague felt like he was in the quiet of a practice gym when he stood at the free throw line for No. 1 Baylor in the closing seconds. And he kept making them.

Teague’s 24 points included six consecutive free throws in the final 14 seconds, four after frustrated Oklahoma State coach Mike Boynton was ejected because of consecutive technical fouls, and the Bears won 78-70 for their 20th victory in a row.

“I just try to shoot them and make them all net,” Teague said. “It just felt like I was in the gym getting practice shots. It felt quiet all around. It felt great.”

Jared Butler added 15 points for Baylor (21-1, 10-0 Big 12), which had five players score in double figures. Freddie Gillespie had 12 points and 11 rebounds.

The Cowboys (11-12, 1-9) also had five players in double figures and were within 70-68 after Lindy Waters III, playing with a protective mask, made two free throws with 35 seconds left

But they also had four players foul out of the game. Boynton’s technical fouls came with nine seconds left after Jonathan Laurent was the fourth to get five fouls.

“Just a lot of frustration,” Boynton said. “I’ve got four guys foul out of the game, that’s pretty hard to understand. The game was obviously pretty physical both ways. So that’s about all I’ll say about that.”

Before leaving the court, with the crowd still buzzing, Boynton patted Teague on the back while he stood near the line, then went over and shook hands with Drew and some of the Baylor assistant coaches.

Baylor was 12-of-25 on free throws before Teague made two with 14 seconds left. He was back at the line a few seconds later after the technicals, then hit four before Gillespie, who had been fouled by Laurent, made his two.

Butler had consecutive 3-pointers that put Baylor up 64-55 with 6:08 left, less than three minutes after the game was tied for the only time. Butler also had a jumper in that 13-4 run, though Oklahoma State wasn’t done until the closing seconds.

Waters had 16 points after missing Oklahoma State’s game because of a fracture near his sinus area after getting hit in the face against Oklahoma last Saturday. Cameron McGriff and Isaac Likekele each had 11 points, while Thomas Dziagwa and Kalib Boone both had 10.

Mark Vital added 13 points for Baylor, while Davian Mitchell had 10.

BIG PICTURE

Oklahoma St.: The young Cowboys were coming off their first Big 12 win, at home over TCU on Wednesday, and again hung tough with Baylor. They were the first Big 12 team to score 70 against the Bears, and first team to outrebound (38-30) them in Waco. Oklahoma State led 30 minutes in the previous meeting last month before Baylor pulled out a 75-68 road win.

“I was proud of what our kids did the two times we played them,” Boynton said. “It doesn’t show up as a win either time, but it’s something certainly that we can build from, and who knows, maybe we’ll see them again.”

Baylor: The last Big 12 team to win 20 games in a row was Kansas in 2008. The conference record is a 22-game streak by the Jayhawks in 1997, the league’s first season. The last time Baylor won 10 consecutive conference games was with a 10-0 start in the Southwest Conference in 1948.

COWBOYS COMEBACKS

After Butler and Teague opened the second half with 3-pointers for a 41-26 lead, the Bears missed seven of their next eight shots. Oklahoma State went on a 15-3 run and was within 3 on Boone’s basket with 13:48 left. About five minutes later, the game was tied 51-all when Waters passed to McGriff for an emphatic two-handed slam. But Mitchell’s three-point play put Baylor ahead to stay.

The Cowboys also fell behind 24-10 midway through the first half before a 14-3 capped by two free throws by Waters that got them to 27-24.

POLL IMPLICATIONS

Baylor, already the first team to hold the No. 1 spot three weeks in a row this season, is all set to make it four when the new Top 25 comes out Monday.

UP NEXT

Oklahoma State plays Wednesday night at Kansas State, the first matchup of the season between the two teams.

Baylor has a quick turnaround for the third time in four weeks with a Monday night game. The Bears are at Texas, which they beat 59-44 in their Big 12 opener at home on Jan. 4.

Knicks’ RJ Barrett effective in return from ankle injury

[ad_1]

The most compelling reason to watch the Knicks the rest of the season is back on the court.

After missing nine games with a sprained right ankle, rookie RJ Barrett returned in Thursday’s 105-103 Garden win over the Magic, finishing with 12 points, three assists and three rebounds. In his first game since Jan. 16, Barrett was limited to 18 minutes off the bench.

“I was sore, but fighting through it,” Barrett said. “It was great to be back out there with my teammates. I just had a lot of fun out there.”

If Barrett was bothered by the ankle, it wasn’t obvious. The third-overall pick was aggressive in attacking the rim and finished a strong first half with 11 points on 3-for-5 shooting from the field.

Barrett, who has averaged over 31 minutes per game this season, played less than seven minutes in the second half and isn’t sure when he’ll resume regular action.

RJ Barrett
RJ BarrettRobert Sabo

“I trust the staff. I trust the coaches,” Barrett said. “They told me they were going to limit me a little bit. They’ve been through this more than I have. I trust them.”

Barrett’s biggest gripe in his return was a familiar one. The 60 percent free-throw shooter hit just 5 of 9 attempts at the line.

“I’m very happy, except for my free throws,” Barrett said. “I’ve been working every day since I got hurt.”

Even with the trade of leading-scorer Marcus Morris, Kevin Knox couldn’t crack the starting lineup. The 2018 lottery pick responded by weakening his case.

Coming off a 12-point effort in Monday’s overtime win over the Cavaliers — breaking a stretch of nine straight games scoring in single-digits — Knox missed his five shots and finished scoreless. The 20-year-old, who averaged 12.8 points as a rookie, has now scored two points or fewer in four of his past six games, and has hit one field goal or fewer in seven of his past nine games.

Kenny Wooten shouldn’t expect a call-up anytime soon.

Even with the passing of the trade deadline, Wooten — the 21-year-old forward, signed to a two-way deal with the Knicks three weeks ago — likely will remain in the G-League for the foreseeable future.

“At this point, I think the most important thing for his development is playing those 30 minutes a game that he’s playing,” interim coach Mike Miller said. “We’ve seen the growth in him getting to play those minutes. The quality minutes are the most important thing for him. getting spot minutes isn’t going to push his development the way it would consistently every night.”

Allonzo Trier and Damyean Dotson both sat out with an illness.
