Results from India's assembly elections for Karnataka state

(15 May 2018) India’s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi emerged Tuesday as the largest single party in the Karnataka state where assembly elections were held ahead of the 2019 general elections.
However, current results show that the BJP is likely to fall short of a clear majority to form government.
Counting was underway in Karnataka on Tuesday, where elections for 222 seats took place on May 12.
BJP supporters holding cardboard cutouts of Modi took to the streets celebrating and chanting victory slogans as results began to come in.
The BJP is in a tight contest with the incumbent Congress party as it tries to get a foothold in the South.
According to the latest results declared by the Election Commission, BJP has so far won 97 seats and was in the lead for another seven, for a total of 104 seats, however, would need 112 seats to get a majority.
The Congress party won 74 seats and was leading in four, while the regional Janata Dal (Secular) won 37 seats.
Congress said it will offer support to a regional party in a post-poll alliance to form government.
The Karnataka state governor will have to decide who to invite for government formation after results are formally declared.
