The New Adaptation of Bret Easton Ellis’ American Psycho is still on track, according to director Luca Guadagnino
who has now offered an exciting update about the project. While details remain under wraps, the director of Challengers and Queer Did say that he is currently working on the movie, and that the script is in development. Unfortunately, he did not offer any update on the casting process, meaning fans will still have to wait until a new Patrick Bateman is officially revealed.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, the Director of the Vastly Underrated Horror Remake Suspiria and the Academy Award-Winner Call me by your name appeared in a video shown at cinemacon during the Lionsgate slate presentation. Many expected some updates about the casting but, sadly, guadagnino gave nothing away. He simply referred to the script, which is being written by Scott Z. Burns, the Screenwriter behind a Handful of Steven Soderbergh Movies, such as Contagion and Side effects. Guadagnigno said the following about Burns:
“He’s doing an incredible job. The script is coming out very handsomely.”
Casting Patrick Bateman is harder than it seems
The new American Psycho Will adapt the novel of the same name, rebooting the adaptation from 2000 by Mary Harron from a script she co-wrote with Guinever Turner. The exceedingly violent movie follows Patrick Bateman, An Investment Banker with a Taste for Murder. The Original Movie was a box office hit and Starred Christian Bale as Bateman Alongside Jared Leto, Chloë Sevigny, Justin Theroux, Willem Dafoe, Josh Lucas and Reese Witherspoon, Among Others. After a few years of its release, it gained a cult following, and is now considered one of the essential films in the genre.
During the event, Guadagnino didnt answer that question in everyone’s minds. But what he did say is that he’s in “Conversation with very exciting performers to play the leads.” The director is no doubt taking his time with what’s an essential element of the movie. No one wants to screw up a casting decision, but being selected to play Patrick Bateman? That’s a double-edged sword not many actors would want to take their chances with.
When the original was released, Christian bales had not quite achieved the profile he has now. The academy awards were still far from his reach, so playing an extremely vain and violent sociopath who loves to indulge in merciless killing have made a serious dent in his career. The Original American Psycho Was so violent, the MPA (which was the mpaa at the time) gave it an NC-17 rating, and some graphic shots had to be cut out to get the much friendlier r rating.
Austin Butler, The Performer Whose Role In Elvis Landed him a best actor nomination, was reported to be attached to the project, but Bret Easton Ellis debunked this casting choice a few months ago. Whether it’s butler, or Jacob Elordi (Another Rumor), Casting Patrick Bateman will be a challenge.
