An IPS officer of 2006, Aarti Singh, became Mumbai’s first joint commissioner of intelligence police on Friday. Singh comes from Mirzapur in Uttar Pradesh and also has an MBBS degree. In order to promote intelligence collection, the sixth post of joint commissioner in the Metropolitan’s power was recently created by the Maharashtra government. “In Mumbai, intelligence collection is done by the special branch, led by an additional commissioner (Deputy Inspector General Rank) who reports to the Joint Commissioner (Act and Command). Now this branch will be led by a joint commissioner, who will be of the inspector of the inspector.” “The special branch monitors every development in the city, collects intelligence input and watches the activities of sleep cells and (terror) sympathizers,” the official added. Under the new mechanism, the Joint Commissioner of Special Branch will report directly to the commissioner and the official will also coordinate with the Joint Commissioner (Act and Command), the official added. “It will help collect intelligence and share information with superiors in time so that quick action can be done.
