The 27-year-old suspected armed man behind the deadly shooting at 345 Park Avenue in Midtown Manhattan has reportedly left a self-page suicidal letter indicating chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) as an important factor in his actions. Former athlete Shane D. Tamura shot and killed four people-including a New York police officer before turning the gun on the 33rd floor of the 44-story skyscraper. The building also houses the headquarters of the National Football League (NFL), which according to authorities that Tamura was deliberately targeted. According to the New York Post, the note refers to its mental health struggle and links it to his involvement in the past with football. He allegedly blamed the sport for causing his CTE, a brain disease associated with repeated head injuries. The note, quoted by CNN, read: “Soccer gave me CTE and it caused me to drink a liter of antivries. You can’t go against the NFL; they’ll be squeaking you.” Tamura also requested that his brain be studied after death, referring to the former Pittsburgh Steelers player Terry Long, who also suffered from CTE and died by suicide in 2006. What is CTE? Chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) is a progressive brain condition that believes due to repeated blows to the head. Early symptoms can be soft or unnoticed, including depression, aggression, mood fluctuations and personality changes. As the disease progresses, people may experience confusion, memory loss and problems with planning or decision making. In advanced cases, movement problems can also develop. CTE is usually observed at athletes involved in contact sports such as American football, boxing and hockey, as well as military veterans exposed to explosion injuries. The condition usually develops years after repeated head trauma and aggravates over time. Tamura, 27, was identified as the first suspect in the shooting in Manhattan who demanded the lives of four people, including NYPD officer Didarul Islam and left one person injured. Authorities confirmed that Tamura died by suicide after the attack.
