PIB describes WAQF Properties as Estates “exclusively dedicated to religious or charity purposes in terms of Islamic legislation, and any other use or sale of the property is prohibited … WAQF properties are assigned to Allah, in the absence of a bodily tangible entity, a ‘mutawalli’ is appointed by the waqif, or by a competitive to manage or administer. ” Iconic WAQF properties across India in December 2024 revealed an internal survey of archaeological survey of India (ASI) that 250 protected monuments in India are currently registered as WAQF properties. The Council of Karnataka Waqf claimed about 53 historic monuments across the state, including iconic Gol Gumbaz, Ibrahim Rauza, Bara Kaman in Vijayapura, Bidar Fort and Kalaburagi Fort, reports Deccan Herald. Bengaluru Eidgah Ground has also been claimed by the WAQF administration since the 1850s. About 43 monuments in Vijayapura were officially declared to WAQF properties in 2005, which is the former capital of the Adil Shahi dynasty.
