Last week, Bertie found himself in Delhi who met bureaucrats, journalists and politicians of all stripes. In the formal sessions, the political correctness prevailed, but Bertie has made policy trips long enough to know that the right juice only starts flowing during the cocktail. Surprisingly, President Trump’s liberation day tariffs and how soon India could do a trade agreement was the center of discussions. Bertie said in Hushed tones that the US trade negotiators remain in the same hotel as the policy tour participants, as if physical proximity to it would also mean a faster flow of information. That, Bertie thinks, takes the concept of fellow location too far, but it made him look at each Westerner for a few seconds longer than he would normally do in the hope of guessing who the voters of the negotiating party were. The general tone was one of the bad, with some members of the group lamenting the ghost of lower export growth from India and a possible increase in unemployment. The old bureaucrat took it all, but in his famously measured tone he opposed that it was not everything in the sum and punishment. “There is a silver lining. There is a fairly big one. ‘ The chatter at the table was killed, and an air of anticipation hung. The former Mandarin did not disappoint. ‘Trading barriers in India have been up for the past few years. There is a reason why the US president calls our tariff King. ” Everyone agreed that rates did indeed rise. The bureaucrat tilted its head slightly after a few Americans hanging at the bar, saying, “If the agreement means that tariff barriers, if not quite, descend at least in line with the rest of the world, it would be an important reform.” There was thoughtful nod around the table. Who could think? ‘ he says happily. “And finally, we can save a little foreign exchange,” he says with a sparkle in the eye. “If US President Ivy League colleges stop taking foreign students, we can save dollars.” Bertie, who has no children, struggled about this, but not by the group of his middle -aged counterparts whose American dreams of children were now under a cloud. Every silver lining, Bertie thinks, has a cloud. Also read: Trump says XI has agreed to restore the flow of rare earthmineral. Why is rare earth important to the Chinese economy?
