The Government of India imposed ban on 25 OTT platforms: Strictness on pornographic material
The government has banned 25 OTT platforms in the country. These 25 mobile apps are accused of serving pornographic materials. Therefore, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting issued an order to block these programs immediately. Internet service providers (ISPs) were sent a copy of the government order and asked to act immediately. The government also warned to take legal action for violating the order. What did the government say in the order? The order of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting states that the central government is against illegal, obscene and offensive digital materials. The government has issued an order to block it by making a list of mobile apps that serve such material. There are 25 programs and websites against which action has been done. 25 Apps were imposed in terms of the BAN Information Technology Act 2000 (IT -Act 2000) and IT -Act 2021 (arbitrative guidelines and code of conduct for digital media code). The prohibition on OTTAPPs also mentions that 25 programs and websites were convicted under sections 67 and 67A of the IT Act, Article 294 of the Indian Judicial Code 2023 and Article 4 of the Pornographic Immovation Promion Act 1986 of the IT Act. If an Internet service provider violates the government order, legal action will be taken against him in terms of section 79 (1) of the IT Act. The government has banned a total of 26 websites, 14 mobile apps (9 on Google Play Store and 5 on Apple App Store). Apps and websites were also banned in March 2024. It is known that the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting also issued an order on March 14, 2024 to prohibit 18 OTT platforms, 19 sites, 10 mobile apps (7 on Google Play Store and 3 on Apple App Store) and 57 Social Media Accounts (Facebook, Instagram, X, YouTube). These platforms were accused of broadcasting vulgar, vulgar and derogatory material painting women, which was violated by Article 67, 67A of IT -Act 2000, Article 294 of the Indian Judicial Code 2023 and the immoral portrayal of the Women’s Act 1986.
