Terminal 1 (T1) of Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport is opening again today after it was closed nine months ago following a collapse of the canopy due to rain. With this and T2 renovation work, key budget transporters such as Indigo and Akasa Air move their domestic flight operations to T1. The new T1 will be fully operational from Tuesday (April 15) until T2 goes through the renovation work. Indigo and Akasa Air worked from Terminal 2 (T2), which managed approximately 270 to 280 flight movements daily and handled more than 46,000 passengers every day. Important things to know the Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA), the largest airport in India and operated by Dial, have three terminal – T1, T2 and T3 – and four runways. Currently, T1 and T2 are only used for domestic flights. While T2 closes to perform maintenance works of today, April 15, and one runway is already closed for maintenance works, all domestic flight operations will now be moved to T1. In a statement on Monday, Indigo said it was issuing all its passengers who informed them about the change in terminal. All the passengers on their way to the airport to fetch their flights are also recommended to use the PNR to confirm departure and coming terminals of their flights. “The airline reaches out to all passengers and their respective travel agents via SMS, calls and email to notify it. Indigo recommends that PNR go to the airline or mobile app website to check the departure / arrival terminal,” it states in a statement. Akasa Air also informed on Monday that it would move all his flight operations to Terminal 1 from April 15. “Our teams work diligently to ensure a seamless transition from our operations from Terminal 2 to Terminal 1,” it says. The extensive T1 can accommodate 40 million passengers. Civil aviation Vumlunmang Vualnam said on Monday that T3 and the T1 will be able to handle passenger traffic and emphasize that it is unlikely to be congestion due to the closure of T2. The newly opened T1 reportedly has 100 inclock banks-36 Self-Bagasie-Drop (SBD) -kiosks, 108 general use self-service (Cuss) kiosks for check-in and self-service and 20 automatic tray tray systems (ATRs) for smoother security checks, Dial said. The terminal was expanded from 55,740 square meters to 2,06,950 square meters. Terminal 1 has its own metro station.
