Salman Rushdie's knife sentenced to 25 years in his eye
New York, May 17 (IANS). The criminal who attacked Salman Rushdie’s eye with a knife was sentenced on Friday to 25 years. The criminal Hadi Matar, who attacked Salman Rushdie’s eye, was convicted by Judge David Foley in the Mavil Court of New York of attempted murder. Rushdie was attacked here. Hadi was convicted in February in terms of state laws, and he is accused of separate terrorism in terms of federal laws. Matar, 27, was also sentenced to seven years, which will go with the main sentence. Jason Schmid, district prosecutor of Chautaqwa County, said after being sentenced: “I am satisfied with the sentence imposed by the judge.” Matar’s lawyer Nathanial Bairon said he would appeal against the decision. Matar attacked Salman Rushdie on stage in the chautaqwa institution in August 2022. Rushdie’s right eye was attacked several times with a knife. As a result, he had to lose this eye. Henry Reese was also injured during the attack. Henry runs a program to give shelter to the writers who have been persecuted. Rushdie discusses the attack and subsequent events in a memoir “Nife” published in 2024. The attack on Salman Rushdie began in 1989. Iran’s highest leader Ayatollah Khomeini issued a Fatwa for Rushdie’s death. Khomeini Rushdie’s novel “The Satanic Verses” issued a Fatwa, which describes it as blasphemy. Rushdie was forced to hide for many years under the protection of British officials because of the fatwa. Later went to New York and then appeared in public. Before he was sentenced, Hadi Matar told the judge that Rushdie “wants to be a crook, he wants to threaten other people. I do not agree with this.” Matar said in a vague statement that Rushdie was condescending to other people, in which he spoke inconsistently about freedom of expression and religion. “There’s an irony in all this,” Schmit said. “Their value system is that they can impose their own sense of justice and punishment on someone who, you know their value system.” According to Bairon, the Matar tried to tell the court to tell its perseverance about Muslim religion. He said some people may agree with Matar. However, other Shia -Muslims said, “What happened is wrong.” When federal allegations were filed against Matar in July, Merric Garland, who was the attorney -general at the time, said he “worked as a terrorism in the name of Hizbullah”, a nominated terrorist organization with Iranian rule. “Bairon said the case is expected to be heard in July, and he hopes the hearing will begin early next year. In the US legal system, and sometimes there are federal and state laws with different states, local and federal court systems, people can be prosecuted for various allegations in the courts. –I’s pack/kr/kr
