Gangster twins, their blues prodigy of a younger cousin, and heated, disparate lovers meet bloodthirsty destinies on a fateful Mississippi night in Sinners. This fifth collaboration between writer/director Ryan Coogler and star Michael B. Jordan (after Fruitvale Station, Creed, Black Panther and its sequel) is a well-acted, supremely entertaining thriller with stunning production values. Sinners brilliantly illustrates Black life in the violent and poverty-stricken Jim Crow-segregated South while portraying a vibrant cultural landscape brimming with musical fellowship. Toss a ruthless vampire antagonist into the mix and the result is a must-see blockbuster that will blow audiences out of their chairs.
In 1932 Clarksdale, Mississippi, “Preacher Boy” Sammie Moore (Miles Caton) finishes his early morning work picking cotton as a sharecropper. He grabs his treasured guitar before reuniting with his older cousins after seven years apart. Twins Smoke and Stack, a truly badass Jordan pulling flawless double duty, returned from Chicago with a bag of loot, stolen booze, and a truckload of band equipment. They’ve bought a shuttered saw mill from its racist owner and have big dreams about opening a swinging juke joint.

Two brothers return to their hometown in the Jim Crow-era South seeking a fresh start, only to find that an even greater evil, including the Ku Klux Klan, has taken root. Michael B. Jordan stars as twins in this vampire thriller directed by Ryan Coogler, blending supernatural horror with historical tension.
Pros & Cons
- Michael B. Jordan is phenomenal playing gangster twins.
- Fantastic supporting performances from Hailee Steinfeld & Wunmi Mosaku.
- Incredible musical numbers and cinematography.
- The vampire showdown does not disappoint.
Smoke and Stack make their presence immediately felt looking for musicians and workers. They’ll put a bullet into anyone who challenges them. Delta Slim (Delroy Lindo), a legendary harmonica and piano player, is easily lured with tasty beer and cash. The big and strong Cornbread (Omar Benson Miller) has a new family and agrees to work the door despite his misgivings. The biggest hurdle is getting Annie (Wunmi Mosaku), Smoke’s old flame and a mystic, on board to cook her delicious fried fish. Stack also gets a public earful from the fiery Mary (Hailee Steinfeld), his white girlfriend who he also left in the lurch.
Meanwhile, as twilight dawns on a nearby farm, the badly burned Remmick (Jack O’Connell) knocks on the door for help. He swears that bandits are chasing him and needs just a little time to recover. Please invite him inside and he’ll soon be on his way. A replenished Remmick then heads out into the night towards his true objective with new followers in tow.

A Legendary Filmmaker Just Hyped Up Ryan Coogler and Michael B. Jordan’s Vampire Movie, ‘Sinners’
The new horror film, featuring Jordan as a vampire, is getting rave reviews from one very influential Academy Award winner.
Coogler draws inspiration from classic Southern lore. Sammie’s extraordinary talent for singing and playing blues guitar can summon spirits from the past and future. Coogler visually represents this supernatural gift on screen in innovative ways. He pulls no punches depicting segregated life, but wants to show how people found happiness and escaped crushing subjugation at roaring juke joints. Coogler pays homage and makes an appreciative statement to the historically downtrodden who lifted desperate souls through music. Sinners could practically be listed as a musical with its incredible song and dance numbers.
Jordan towers over the film with two incredible performances. Smoke and Stack have very different personalities, but it’s easy to understand how their team dynamics lead to success. Smoke is the undisputed leader. He’s all business and as serious as a heart attack at the Golden Corral buffet. Stack defers to his brother but has a hint of sweetness and mischief. Both protect each other and their family as the first priority. They’ve seen the evil in men’s hearts, but tackle a whole new challenge when Remmick shows up to crash the party.
Romance Is the Beating Heart of ‘Sinners’
The brothers’ romantic troubles are riveting and key to the narrative. Steinfeld continues to prove why she’s one of Hollywood’s brightest young stars. Mary and Stack have an intense chemistry that cannot be denied. But an interracial love affair was a deadly proposition. Stack can take care of himself. He left Mary behind to protect her. She doesn’t want to hear that excuse. Mary understands how she will be judged but couldn’t care less. What they have together is worth the risk.

The director also revealed who he thinks was hit hardest by Chadwick Boseman’s tragic death.
Smoke’s relationship with Annie is more mature and layered. Jordan and Mosaku are equally spellbinding in their romance. No spoilers, as they have a complex backstory, but suffice it to say, their troubles are extremely relatable. What they’ve dealt with and suffered through can push anyone to the breaking point. There’s a time when the only way to deal with pain is to walk away. Smoke and Annie’s reconciliation is amazing to behold and bursting at the seams with bottled lust. Pulses are going to race and collars will be loosened.
A Must-See in IMAX
Sinners delivers the horror goods with a ferocious third act. The vampire showdown does not disappoint. O’Connell, a superb English actor known for Unbroken, Godless, and the Amy Winehouse biopic Back to Black, plays Remmick with tremendous nuance. He’s a monster, but not without beguiling virtues. There’s a reason he wants Sammie. Remmick represents the ultimate devil’s bargain. Why not join him in feasting on the blood of the oppressors? They lynch, rape, and torture with impunity. Don’t they deserve a savage response? This subplot goes in an unexpected direction that’s not predictable.
Sinners is a feast for the senses. The music deserves praise, but the cinematography must also be extolled. Coogler uses 65MM cameras for glorious widescreen shots that are breathtaking. You can feel the sun sizzle on the cotton fields as Smoke, Stack, and Sammie drive through a landscape powered by backbreaking labor, but also rejoice in elation as the juke joint bursts with frenetic energy. Sinners looks damn good and has to be seen in IMAX. It’s worth the price of admission for the premium experience. Stick around during and after the credits. Sinners is a production of Proximity Media. It will be released theatrically on April 18th from Warner Bros. Buy tickets now at Fandango. IMAX tickets and locations can be found here.
