Is 'A Minecraft Movie' Worth Watching? – ryan

When I first saw the trailer for A Minecraft Movie, I immediately believed it would be terrible. Having been a fan of the game for over a decade, I’ll admit that I was disappointed with the apparent direction of the film. Nevertheless, I reluctantly decided to see it opening weekend and was shocked at how much I enjoyed it. I fully expected this film to be a complete and utter disaster. However, it didn’t take long for the movie to win me over. In fact, it happened almost immediately. As soon as the soothing Minecraft music began to play, I was happy. Everyone who has ever played the game knows exactly what I’m talking about.
I’m well aware A Minecraft Movie will only appeal to a very specific group of people, and I just happened to be one of those people. For those who love Minecraft and play it regularly, the movie doesn’t disappoint. In fact, it’s actually pretty good. That being said, there’s a huge caveat to its allure. You have to know the game. Otherwise, it more than likely comes across as pure nonsense. It is a completely ridiculous movie, but for those who know and love Minecraft, the adaptation works somehow. It shouldn’t make sense, and yet it does.

A huge part of enjoying A Minecraft Movie comes from thoroughly enjoying the game. I played it before I was a parent, and now I play it with my daughter. I’ve been playing Minecraft for over a decade and consider it one of the most fun games out there. It’s such a simple game, but that’s part of what makes it so delightful. Seeing the world of Minecraft come to life was more exciting than I thought it would be. Aside from the major storyline involving the Overworld, there were so many subtle aspects of the game included in the film that only Minecraft players would find amusing.
From how baby animals are created in the game to the library of unmarked chests Henry (Sebastian Hansen) has to search in the woodland mansion, such scenes are amusing to Minecraft players. When the baby zombie came out in full force, it was beyond comical. Those baby zombies are the worst, and anyone who’s ever played Minecraft knows exactly what I’m talking about. That being said, it probably wasn’t as funny to everyone else.

An unfinished workprint of ‘A Minecraft Movie’ leaked online before being taken down by Warner Bros.
After watching the movie, I’m hoping there’s a sequel, which might be a possibility according to the film’s post-credits scene. So many aspects of the game didn’t make it to the movie, and now I want to see them on the big screen. A Minecraft Movie didn’t even touch on witches, phantoms, the Ender Dragon, the games’ various biomes, cats as pets, taming horses, etc. The list could go on and on. There’s so much about Minecraft to showcase. When I first watched the trailer for this movie, I never would have guessed I’d be pining for another one, but there are certainly other Minecraft fans who feel this way.
‘A Minecraft Movie’ Has a Lot of Quick-Witted Jokes for Adults
Without a doubt, A Minecraft Movie is for children, and there are probably millions of parents out there who are reluctant to take their kids to see this movie. Thankfully, though, for adults who are in the dark about the game, there are a ton of quick-witted jokes from beginning to end for parents to enjoy. While there are definitely some innuendos strictly meant for an older audience, the wit has more to do with the film’s self-awareness, which I was not anticipating loving so much.

‘A Minecraft Movie’ was originally meant to perform OK at the box office…so what happened?
Part of what makes the movie so good is that it knows exactly what kind of film it is and pokes fun at itself the entire time. That being said, it doesn’t disparage itself. From the beginning, it’s clear that those responsible for bringing A Minecraft Movie to life genuinely appreciate the game. For Minecraft lovers such as myself, it’s easy to see how much the movie strives to uphold the inimitable nature of the game that so many of us enjoy.
The movie isn’t for everyone, but if you love Minecraft, I have no doubt you’ll have a great time at the theater with this one. I know it seems like a ridiculous notion, but trust me, A Minecraft Movie is actually good, especially when you’re a die-hard fan of the game. A Minecraft Movie is currently playing in theaters.
