The Haryana government has changed the definition of forest area whereby trees that have grown on less than five hectares of land outside the reported forest areas will not be considered forest. According to India State Forest Report (ISFR) -2019, the forest area of Haryana was 1,602 square km, which rose to 1,614,26 square kilometers in 2023. That is, an increase of 12.26 square kilometers. During this period there was an increase in 146.35 square km in Himachal Pradesh and 224.39 square kilometers in Jammu and Kashmir. However, during this period, Punjab saw a decrease of 2.91 square kilometers. According to Isfr report, a forest area of just 30 square kilometers in ten years, between 2013 and 2023, the forest area in Haryana registered an increase of only 30.88 square kilometers. During this period, Himachal Pradesh recorded an increase of 897.35 square km and Punjab 55.31 square km. The forest area in Jammu and Kashmir increased by 398.12 square kilometers and Ladakh 807.92 square kilometers. According to the report of the entire Central Strong Committee, the target of foresting could not be made, the target of Haryana foresting from 2019-20 to 2023-24 was 5,803,08 hectares, of which 5,012,91 hectares were planted in the area. For these years, the central government granted financial approval of 962.22 crore, but the state government released 1.041 crore, which is more than the approved amount.
