Your eyes may help detect early symptoms of dementia – ryan
A recent scientific study from the University of Otugo in New Zealand showed that eye examination may help doctors discover signs of dementia before memory loss appears.
Dr. Ashley Barrett-Young, professor of psychology at the university, said that the retina is directly connected to the brain, which makes it able to reflect the changes that occur in the brain, such as the signs of Alzheimer’s.
She explained that the blood vessels in the eye can show early signs of damage associated with dementia, noting that the narrow arteries and wide veins are often more common among people with brain aging.
She also added that the eye examination is a tool for early detection of dementia, as it does not require surgery and is performed easily compared to costly tests such as MRI.
The results of the retina examination may reveal the extensive extensive veins, which are an early warning signs.
Despite the promising results, the study confirmed that dementia cannot be predicted based on eye examination at the present time, and that more research is needed before the examination becomes a practical diagnostic tool.
