Like other Tech Companies, Meta is always looking for ways to integrate into users’ lives in as many ways as possible. The most recent push is to get meta into the the theaters with an upcoming special screening or M3gan – and potentially Mother and Annabelle – Introducing its new “movie mate” technology. The New Tech Allows Audiences to ‘Interact’ with the Movie Through Their Cellphones (Because Heaven forbid you engage with your intellecting behind-the-scenes moments, trivia, and the promise of other potential surprises.
Available in theaters only and used through Instagram, the New Tech is also said to help promote the upcoming M3gan Sequel while acting as a way to celebrate the halfway market to Halloween. However, Don’t let the Corporate Positivity and Performative Celebration of the Arts Fool You;; From a corporate standpoint, the goal here is to integrate meta into the theater-going experience to increase revenue and reach. If the deceptive named “Movie mate” is not a friend, the outcome will be a nightmare for theaters.

Perhaps this sounds a bit hyperbolic, but The Theater-Going Experience has become a battleground between old and new fans. To channel an inner old man yelling at kids on a lawn, the theater has become less of a priority as a movie fan, partly due to the desensing gap between theatrical and streaming, but also because of little desire to deal with the atmosphere. Granted, not all experience will be bad. However, recent incidents, like the Minecraft movie Screenings Devolving into Tiktok Events Involving Audience Members Shouting at the Screen and Leaving Mountains of Filth Behind (and some vomit), or unwanted sing-alongs with Wickedhave lessened the excitement for theaters.

Tech Companies will always find ways to interject themselves where they don’t belong and get away with as much as possible. “Movie mate” deserves to go right into the garbage. The theater experience in 10 years could involve children watching an advertisement on their phone to get to the next endorphin rush of a match game sponsored by the movie they are supposed to be watching. The audience at the M3gan Re-screenings are liquid to elicit horror than the film itself. I think i’ll be skipping it, and you should, too.
