Perhaps best known for her work as TV Sleuth Jessica Fletcher on the long -lasting Murder, His HaveBroadway fans will always think of the beloved Angela LansburyWho deceased October 11 at the age of 96, while the woman who has the roles of Mame and Mrs. Lovett created in two classic sensational, hitting musicals. In reality she received Tony Awards for her performances in both Mame and Sweeney Todd as well as for her work in Gypsy, dear world, and Blithe Spirit (plus a sixth lifelong performance Tony). Lansbury also appears on the big white way in Gore Vidal is the best man, a little night music, Deuc, Hotel Paradiso, a taste of honey, someone can whistle, the king and I, and A small family businessand her numerous film credits include Gaslight, the photo of Dorian Gray, and The Manchurian candidatewho all brought the Kennedy Center Honoree Academy Award nominations.
While Broadway mourns the loss of one that is the brightest lights, we look back at the career of this star artist with these show performances.
“Little Yellow Bird” of The photo of Dorian Gray
The first time US audiences had the chance to hear Lansbury singing (in a voice very different from her later Broadway trips) was in the 1945 film The photo of Dorian Graywhich deserves the stage and the screen plays her second Oscar nomination.
“I don’t want to know” of Dear world
Though the Jerry Herman Music Bell Dear world Lansbury’s performance played only 132 performances, while Gravin Aurelia brought her a second Tony award in 1969. The Julie Andrews Hour, Lansbury performed the most famous song of the musical, “I don’t want to know.” (Performance starts at the 3:02 point.)
“Open a new window‘ of Mame
During the Tony Awards in 1971, Lansbury was given the opportunity to re-create one of the Jerry Herman classic from her Tony award-winning performance in the 1966 musical.
“Replacement movement” of Bedknobs and broomsticks
Long before she sang a story as old as the time, Lansbury interpreted in another Disney music’s play, the 1971 hit Bedknobs and broomsticks, for which she received a Golden Globe nomination. Here she joins the cast in the Sherman Brothers song “Substitutionary Loom motion.”
“Some people,” “together where we go,” and “Rose’s turn” of Gypsy
After taking London with Storm, Lansbury returned to Broadway in 1974 in the first revival of the classic Broadway music. GypsyAnd then earn her third Tony for her actions as Rose. This footage of the archive press is somewhat grainy, but the performance is great.
“The worst pies in London” of Sweeney Todd
Lansbury won four of her five Tony awards for performances in musicals, but the only musical performing on film is her spectacular original work as Mrs. Lovett in Stephen Sondheim’s Sweeney Todd. Here she performs Lovett’s first solo in the 1980 National Tour of the Tony-winning musical, which George Hearn teamed up.
“Bosom friends” of Mame
At the Tony Awards in 1998, long -time friends and original Mame Co-stars Lansbury and Bea Arthur created their duet again of the Tony award-winning Jerry Herman Music, both of which brought their first Tony Awards.
“Everything is coming up Rose” of Gypsy
In the late 80s, Lansbury presented the Tony Awards for three consecutive years in 1987. In 1989 she opened the awards program with the first final of Gypsy.
“Send the clowns in” of A small night music
Lansbury played mme. Armfeldt in the 2009 Broadway revival of A small night music, But during the Kennedy Center voucher of 1993, she had the chance to perform Desiree’s solo to honor Stephen Sondheim.
“Beauty and the animal” of Beauty and the animal
Lansbury joined the Mormon Tabernacle Choir in 2001 for her actions as Mrs. Potts again, and sing the title song from the 1991 Blockbuster Disney movie.
“Links” of A small night music
During the Olivier Awards in 2011, Lansbury MME performed. Armfeldt’s solo in celebration of Stephen Sondheim’s special Olivier Award.
