Borno government warns against 'irregular' social media behavior among youth
The government has called on the youth to maintain the values and traditions of the Borno State, commonly known as the ‘home of peace’. The Borno State Government said it expressed deeply concerns about what is described as the ‘irregular behavior and disorderly behavior’ of some youth taken to social media to view threats and statements that are contrary to the state’s culture and way of life. In a statement released on Thursday by the Culture Directorate, Ministry of Information and Internal Security, the government condemned recent social media posts showing that some young individuals hold knives, insult government officials and dispute legal policies. “Some of the posts portray some youngsters who hold knives, insult government officials and challenge legal policy of the government. This is unacceptable,” the statement reads. The government has called on the youth to maintain the values and traditions of the Borno State, commonly known as the ‘home of peace’. It highlights the importance of maintaining social harmony and respecting each other among the diverse communities of the state, which is spread over eight Emirates. “Borno state is proud of the ‘home of peace’ where our diverse communities live in peace, togetherness, fairness, tolerance and harmony. We appeal to our youthful youth to maintain an orderly behavior that corresponds to our age-half tradition, norms and values,” the statement added. While the constitutional rights of every Nigerian are confirmed to freedom of expression, speech and peaceful meeting, the government has warned that it will not tolerate any actions that violate the public order or violate the law. “To avoid the avoidance of doubt, the Borno State Government respects the constitutional law of every Nigerian about freedom of expression, free speech and peaceful assembly. However, the government will not stand by the citizens and allow the citizens to violate law and order or violate the Constitution.” The government has assured the public that its doors remain open to legal expressions of grievances and constructive involvement. This urged the citizens to refrain from delivering inflammatory statements, spreading misinformation or doing hate speech. “Anyone who wants to express himself or herself must do so within the ambitions of the law. Citizens must refrain from making counter-intuitive statements, distributing fake news or demonstrating hateful behavior. Anyone who violates the law will face the full wrath of the law,” the statement added.
