40 feet container falls on vehicles on Lagos Expressway if one dies, five others injured

A 40-foot truck road accident left one person dead and injured five others next to Cele Expressway, the inner Oshodi, Lagos state. The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (Lastma) confirmed the incident, which occurred earlier on Saturday, the articulated truck, five commercial buses and two private vehicles – a Toyota Camry and a Sienna bus. Preliminary reports from Lastma indicate that the truck, which had two large containers, had a catastrophic brake failure as he moved quickly. The driver lost control, causing the containers to loosen and crashed on the nearby vehicles, resulting in serious damage and casualties. A pedestrian was dead on the spot, while five other different degrees of injuries sustained. One of the commercial bus drivers has reportedly suffered compound fractions in his arm and leg. Emergency respondents from Las Ambus transported all injured victims to the General Hospital in Isolo for urgent medical assistance. The Lastma officials, in collaboration with the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (Lasema), Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), and concerned citizens, performed fast rescue operations and helped restore normal traffic flow along the highway. The Ijesha-Tedo police department also deployed officers to maintain order on the scene. In a statement, the Lastma general manager, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Doki, expressed compassion for the deceased’s family and the injured wanted a quick recovery. He emphasizes the need for regular mechanical inspections of articulated vehicles, especially those carrying heavy containers, and insists that traffic regulations adhere to strictly. “The safety of all road users is extremely important. We cannot continue to lose lives to prevent incidents caused by the negligence of the vehicle and reckless driving,” Bakare-Oki said. “There is currently an investigation to determine the full circumstances of the accident and ensure liability,” the statement added.
