Supreme Court Julius Abure Sends as National Chairman of the Labor Party, void the decision of Court of Appeal

According to the judges, the case was strictly an internal party matter, which does not judge the courts. The Nigeria High Court has thrown out the ruling of the Court of Appeal in Abuja, which Julius Abure previously confirmed as the National Chairman of the Labor Party (MP). A panel of the Apex Court made the verdict on Friday, and unanimously ruled that the Court of Appeal had no power to interfere in the party’s leadership. According to the judges, the case was strictly an internal party matter, which does not judge the courts. This ruling effectively ended Abure’s claim to the national leadership of the Labor Party and threw the party into a further crisis. Prior to this ruling of the Supreme Court, the Court of Appeal ruled in January that Abure remained the national chairman of the Labor Party. The Court of Appeal argued that the leadership of a political party was beyond judicial intervention, and rejected a ruling by the Lower Court by Justice Eka Nwite of the Federal High Court, which previously invalid Abure’s position. However, the Supreme Court has now dominated and reinforced the ruling that leadership disputes within a political party cannot be resolved by the judiciary. With this latest decision, the Labor Party is left in Onrus, as the struggle for the control of his leadership is raging.
