(File Photo) Delhi News Today: The major lack of judges in the Delhi High Court has put the legal system in a serious crisis. A letter was written to the Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court stating that only 36 judges were sanctioned in court against the 60 judges (45 permanent and 15 additional) in the present time. There is a shortage of 40% judges in the Delhi High Court compared to the total number. The petition submitted by senior attorney and social activist Amit Sahni said many judges, including Justice Relha Palli and Anop Kumar Mendiratta, retired. In addition, Justice Yashwant Verma and Justice CD Singh were transferred to the High Court in Allahabad and Justice Dinesh Kumar Sharma. The petition said that the judges will retire Dharmesh Sharma and Shalinder Kaur at the end of this year, which can make the situation even more serious. In such a situation, the number of judges will be reduced to 34. This deficit affects the number of pending matters. The petition warns that it could delay the disputes, appeal, bail and commercial disputes, which affect the rights and economic development of citizens. As a result, the confidence of the public in the justice system also decreases and the career of young attorneys is influenced. The waiting petition, the guard for people to do justice, quoted the 1998 Memorandum of Procedure (MOP), instructing the appointment process six months before the vacancy, but this is not followed. The requester demanded that the promotion of district judges and the appointment of qualified attorneys be reinforced. He requested to keep this letter for consideration on the right as a letter petition. The Delhi High Court recently described the lack of judges as “very painful” because many cases remain unheard of. Experts believe that this crisis not only affects the credibility of the justice system, but also causes the promotion of criminals and deprived the victims in time. The government and the Supreme Court Collegium are expected to act immediately on this issue. First Published: April 28, 2025, 19:57 IST Hmedelhi-Ncr Delhi High Court? Advocate reached with a petition
