Foggy lower metro station evacuated after tunnel fire causes major delays on blue, orange and silver lines | Today news
A fire in a tunnel near the foggy lower metro station early Thursday morning caused major disruptions over three Metrorail lines and led to the temporary closure and evacuation of the station. The fire, which was reported shortly after 6am, stopped the train service between McPherson Square and Clarendon/Arlington cemetery on the blue, orange and silver lines. Metro initially received reports of smoke in the foggy lower station before confirming the presence of a fire in the nearby tunnel. DC Fire and EMS answered quickly and worked with Metro staff to contain the incident. No injuries were reported. The station closed, and then reopened the foggy understate, was evacuated and closed during the emergency response, but reopened around 08:15 after fire staff completed inspections and cleaned the scene. Trains also temporarily did not walk between Farragut West and Rosslyn as a precaution while safety controls were performed. Alternative transport arranged metro to deploy commuting buses to bridge the gap in the service in the stations concerned. The shuttle service operated between McPherson Square, Farragut West, Foggy Bottom, Rosslyn, Courthouse and Clarendon. Additional staff were stationed at each stop to help commuters. In addition, metrobus routes offered alternative connections: A58 connected Farragut West with Clarendon D10 ran between McPherson Square and Foggy Bottom Service Modifications, while fire departments and metro technicians worked to restore normal surgeries, silver line trains were limited to between Ashburn and Ballston. Investigation on the cause of the fire continues to be investigated. Officials did not disclose any structural damage to the tunnel or station infrastructure.
