Earthquake Today: Trembling of Size 5.7 Strikes Indonesia's Sulawesi

The German Geosciences Research Center (GFZ) hit a 5.7 earthquake on Sunday. The earthquake was at a depth of 10 km (6.21 miles), GFZ said. The earthquake of size 4.9 strikes to Afghanistan an earthquake of size 4.9 shocked Afghanistan late Saturday night, the National Center for Seismology (NCS) said in a statement. According to the NCS, the earthquake occurred at a level depth of 10 km, making it susceptible to aftershocks. In a post on X, the NCS said: “See of M: 4.9, Op: 16/08/2025 23:05:03 IST, Lat: 36.83 N, Long: 71.01 e, depth: 10 km, Location: Afghanistan.” https://x.com/ncs_earthquake/status/1956774604703494161 Earlier on August 13, another earthquake of size 4.2 hit the region at a depth of 10 km. Level earthquakes are generally more dangerous than deep earthquakes. This is because the seismic waves of shallow earthquakes have a shorter distance to travel to the surface, leading to a stronger soil shake and possibly more damage to structures and larger casualties. The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (Unocha), Afghanistan, noted that the country remains very vulnerable to natural disasters, including seasonal floods, landslides and earthquakes.
