A 19-year-old Varanasi woman claimed that she had been kidnapped and subjected by several individuals over a seven-day period, from March 29 to April 4, the Times of India reports. When she returned home, she reported the incidents to her family, who subsequently notified the police. A fir has been registered, and six suspects have been arrested so far. The authorities actively strive for the remaining accused. According to the woman’s account, she was taken to a cafe in the Lanka area on March 29, where she was allegedly assaulted. Over the next days, she encountered different groups of men who took her to various places under different pretext, including cafes, hotels and a warehouse, where she was allegedly intoxicated and assaulted. The ordeal continued until April 4, when she managed to return and disclose the events to her family. Deputy Police Commissioner (Varuna Zone) Chandrakant Mina confirmed that a fir had been imposed on the basis of the mother’s complaint. The charges include gang rape, the administration of harmful substances, unlawful incarceration and criminal intimidation among relevant parts of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Assistant Commissioner of Police (Cantt), Vidush Saxena, said six individuals were arrested, and that efforts were made to arrest the remaining suspects. The allegations have a major concern in the community about women’s safety. Local organizations are calling on the authorities to speed up the investigation and ensure justice for the victim. Counseling services are offered to the woman and her family to support them through this challenging time.
