The director of the poetic nostalgia and nostalgia for the beautiful time Miscellaneous – Bahraini Al -Wasat newspaper – ryan
The camera does not move much in the films of Bahraini director Mohammed Rashid Bouali. You may find it as well, and at the same time you may feel its soft flowing movement. But you are also definitely, you will see it and make it move slowly, transfer the sounds and the most accurate details of things and most of all will convey the sense of Bouali and perhaps the characters of his films. This camera will always meet in all his films, “Absence”, “Al -Bashara”, “Canary” and finally “Here London” and even his short movie “Under the sky”.
Perhaps the most important thing that distinguishes his films is that soft, smooth camera, which always forces you to stop in front of the details of its scenes, look at the gestures of its actors, even if it is few in its number. The same old houses that merge his viewers in the case of nostalgia that Bouali wants to transfer through all his films. The same poetic music that comes to complement the image. The same long scenes with their few events and details of their distant deep meanings.
«Absence»: Nostalgia
In the “absence”, his third film that he produced himself in 2008, we found ourselves among an old, dilapidated house, devoid of any movement except from a yellow paper that falls from Ali, a rusty fan that is almost revolving, a folded newspaper dumped with neglect, and an old radio from which Umm Kulthum sings while she sings “but I forgot the smile.” His hero Abdullah Malik, one old man. Time mourns as Bouali does in all his films, he carries nostalgia that we do not show his destination, but it is definitely nostalgia. Related to his past. His nostalgia is embodied in all his gestures, even when he bends with tenderness to pick up a yellow sheet that falls into the plate of his house, putting it aside with carefully carefully. He opens the door, discovers his illusion, tells his wife, persuades him with his illusion, responds with conviction, but it seems that he would like to live and delusion. The illusion is tortured or unable to live without him, it does not matter, but he transmits his illusion to his old wife. We find nostalgia for the same voices and repeat the same scene. The illusion of Umm Ragheban in the illusion does not matter, all the heroes of Bouali live the same illusion. What matters is what moves them towards this space, it is the nostalgia for the past, whatever that past, even if Muhammad alludes in one way or another to the beauty of that past and perhaps its purity. Besides, all the heroes of Muhammad live in a completely incomprehensible waiting. We do not show what they are waiting for, but it is definitely, and as Bouali hints, waiting for his trouble and requires the unity of his heroes and their immersion in a state of meditation and poetry that almost separates them from their reality.
“The absence” relied on the scenario of the writer and film critic Hassan Haddad, on the text of the poet Qasim Haddad entitled “The only and unity”. His crew includes both the artist Abdullah Malik and the actress Shaima Al -Kassar, photographed by Abdullah Rashdan, while he performed the montage process, Mohamed Jassim, to complete Muhammad Haddad that visual creativity with wonderful music that completed the abundance of Bouali thought and deepened his heroes.
“The absence” was presented in nearly 24 Arab and international festivals and won a number of awards, the first came in May 2008 when he won the Special Jury Prize at the Arab Film Festival Protedam, after which the jury award for the Arab competition “Silver” in the Bahraini competition from the Rif Short Film Festival in August 2008, which was awarded a certificate of appreciation to the artist Abdullah Malik and another for the musician Muhammad Haddad.
In October 2008 he was awarded the Best Film Poster Award from the Middle East Film Festival- Film Competition, and was also received the silver award from the Jordan Film Festival for Short Films in November 2008, to finally come the third prize of the Muhammadiyah International Film Festival in its fourth session in Morocco in April 2010.
“Canary” and “Al -Bashara”: Everything is seduced by meditation
The illusion that a king lived in a “absence” is similar to that they are Saad Al -Buainain in “Canary”, who produced the year 2010, and he is the old man who lives alone except from a cut -off phone that spends part of his day in delusional phone conversations, while the rest of his day spends a single silent day outside his house except from a Canary bird accompanied by these eloquent silence sessions. Al -Bouainin behaves as Abdullah Malik in “absence”, he is illusory, the return of loved ones who do not return, and dreams of a visitor knocking on the door of his house. He never came, and perhaps he will not.
The writer and novelist Amin Saleh created the scenario of the movie “Canary”, while musician Mohamed Haddad, in cooperation with Hassan Haddad, sponsored the creativity of the film’s music. Muhammad Haddad, however, is the one who put the five film music for Bouali discussed by this article. The roles of the film played by Saad Al -Buainain, both Anisa Porshid, Dana Al -Salem, Radi Al -Ali, Abdullah Hafez.
In the third films of Bouali, “Al -Bashara”, which was produced by Bahrain Film Production Company in 2009, while the novelist Farid Ramadan put his scenario, the sea was tempting meditation, just as he tempted the old neighborhood in Muharraq Abdullah Malik, so he refused to leave, and he was waiting for a dead wife, hanging the gown of the gospel in a scene that was a cause of long meditation. The past to which the king of a beautiful past yearns, then his body, Bouali, in the form of a loving wife, was kidnapped by death.
The face of the face of a king and his dislikes, while playing an old role that was burdened by the years of unity and alienation, to lose his wife and to try his children to drag him from his past and remove him from him.
“Al -Bashara” was presented in a significant number of Arab films festivals throughout the Arab world and in Europe and won a number of awards and honors; He first received a certificate of appreciation for the best actor and went to the artist Abdullah Malik from the Gulf Film Festival in April 2009, then the audience award for the best movie from the Arab World Festival for the Short Film in Morocco in July 2009.
“Under the sky”: Canary is a hero
In the short film “Under the sky”, we will find ourselves in another old house, piles of old newspapers, a single old man, who picks an old newspaper to sit alone outside his house on a wooden chair that resembles the seat of the two sons. Al -Canary himself, but this time he does not sit with the old man, he only breaks silence, and continues to tweet to the end, just as the water flowing from a Hanafi did not give the old fate to close it and stop the flow of its water. The Canary, however, will find him a repeated hero with Bouali, in the “absence”; As it passes quickly in the first scenes, and in “Canary” when he becomes an important party in the story and perhaps one of its heroes, and here in “Under the sky” when Muhammad recounts his name in the end of the end as one of the actors.
Just as the camera is silent for a long time in front of the scene of the old man sitting on his wooden chair in “Canary”, she is silent here in front of the scene of flowing water and the home -free house, and the old woman lying on the ground cannot move.
The movie “Under the sky” came the product of a film workshop presented by the famous Iranian director Abbas Kiarostami, during which a group of young directors trained during the fourth session of the Gulf Film Festival that was held in April 2011. The films resulting from the workshops were put in place, photographed, directed, and completed all the montage operations related to it in a period not exceeding three days, the same period during which the workshop was held. Those films were shown during the fifth session that was held last April as part of a special paragraph in the festival program presented under the title “Cherry Kiarostami”.
“Here London”: A sad poetic comedy!
Here is Bouali returns the ball in “Hana London”, but a little different. Here we find old people who wrestle with many circumstances only in order to take a photo of their son traveling to London. The roles of this film, which can be classified in the black comedy films, is Hoda Sultan, Mubarak Khamis and Muhammad Jassim. Bouali received an achievement grant to produce this film, which is the first Gulf movie to obtain. Creative Emirati writer Mohamed Hassan Ahmed presented the beautiful scenario of the film.
The task seems difficult, as the wife refuses to take the photo in a studio, prefer the house, the father decides to use the son of the neighbors, the photographer. After that, the image of the mother with the head of the “abaya” head does not look logical as a picture directed to a son who lacks his parents. The father and photographer are convinced by the camera can be timed to take the image without a photographer. A shameful mouse opposes the impossible task as well. The rhythm of this mouse appears impossible. The couple costs a lot of cheese, as the image costs them a lot of time, negotiations and quarrels, and a lot of grumbling and resentment of the son of the neighbors. We do not know yet all that trouble if the picture has reached its last destination.
Comedy of the last Bouali movie, but despite that we will find the same nostalgia that fills his previous films, this time directed to the son of the old man, the absent traveler, just as the king of the gospel directed him to a deceased wife, while the king of absence and two sons did not specify the destination of their nostalgia.
It is noteworthy that this film is the first short Gulf film project to obtain a “achievement” grant for joint production granted by the Dubai Media and Entertainment Corporation in cooperation with the Dubai Film Market, for Gulf films. Then the film won the third Gulf Festival Award for Best Best Gulf Film.
It is also, then, and it is also, a dreamer poet’s director, originality is what is concerned with his mind, his themes indicate that, absence is the dominant theme in all his films, the absence of voices, the absence of movement, the absence of people, the absence of the sea, the absence of the old neighborhood, the absence of beautiful time.
Waiting is also repeated as the good news that does not come, the visitor of the door does not knock on the “absence” and the wife does not return in the “good news” and the old man loses his bird in “Canary”, and here in “Hana London” we do not know if the couple’s message reaches their son as we do not know if we are able to catch the mouse in their partners.
In the film, we will also find the elderly, the only, the only one, which carries nostalgia, love and all the feelings of beautiful time, amid the conflicts of their faces. We will see nostalgia that sneaks as a warm, sad beam, uttering a lot, much more than what the personality herself speaks. Muhammad’s characters do not speak much.
They are the themes themselves, absence, nostalgia, alienation, and all, all the themes of Bouali revolve in the middle of his personalities, in a beautiful symbolism to the homeland. It is also, and he is Mohammed Rashid Bouali, the director of poetry and nostalgia for the beautiful time.
