South Korea: Why did the mayor of Sol announce not to dispute the presidential election?
Sol, April 12 (IANS). Sol’s Mayor Oh-Hun of Hoon said on Saturday that he would not take part in the presidential election, which will be held on June 3. He apologized for the ‘failure’ of the government of former South Korean President Union Suk Yol. Oh Se-Hun made the announcement in the headquarters of the Orthodox People’s Power Party in Western Sol. He was believed to dispute the election, but he made it clear that he would not participate. The presidential election is held because former President Yu was removed from the post in December after an unsuccessful attempt to implement martial law. Oh Se-Hoon said, “I will act like a soldier who is without any rank to bring the unusual in a normal position.” He said, “I am very sad about the persecution of the elected president of my own party and feel fully responsible.” Oh To-Hoon said: “I politely apologize for the obstacle in the operation of the country and the disappointment of the people. No member of our party can escape the responsibility for the failure of the government of the Union.” According to the Yonhap News Agency, OH Se-Hun called on his party and presidential candidates to focus on the development and assistance of the needy. At the same time, he promised that he would support those who agree with his view, they will support efforts to form a new government. Many conservative leaders have announced to participate in the upcoming election, including former Labor Minister Kim Moon-Su and former PPP leader Han Dong-Hoon. President Yu announced an emergency in South Korea on December 03, but it was canceled after Parliament voted against it. Marshal Law remained in effect for a few hours, but shook the country’s politics. The National Assembly accepted an ominous motion against the President Union Suk Yol. The issue of Yu’s prosecution went to the Constitutional Court. The court continued with the prosecution that Yu had to step down to. In addition to prosecution, Yu still faces criminal cases on the allegations of rebellion related to the order of his martial law. According to the Constitution, if the position of president is vacant, it is necessary to hold a new election within 60 days. -Ians shk/mk
