Awadh's Nawabs used to cast rupees on Holi
Many used to crores or crores on Holi, Holi, the Nawab of Avadh, were not only for ordinary people, but also the feast of royal homes. Awadh’s Nawab Saadat Ali Khan and Asafuddaula used to spend rupees in the preparations for Holi. Nawab Asafuddaula used to play Holi, the famous poet Mir Taki Mir wrote Hori song “Hori Khele Asafuddaula Wazir, has Sohbat Hai Khurd-O-Pir.” At the occasion of Holi, Nawab Saadat Ali Khan previously held a dance singing meetings of Tawaifs and was satisfied with his art and looted gold and silver coins on him. Wajid Ali Shah, the last Nawab of Awadh, was an art lover. He made Thumri singing popular. His Holi Thumri wrote “Jab Chhai Rang Ki Pahar”, is still the choice of music lovers. He wrote: “More Kanha Jo came back, this Holi, I will play nap.” Wajid Ali Shah’s Holi was different. He himself drank cold and spread sweets and cold among the general public. Wajid Ali Shah also played Holi in his palace with eunuchers and Fakirs. There was such a confluence of color and enthusiasm in the courts that the entire capital became colorful. The historian Maheshwar Dayal wrote that Muslim rulers in India also celebrated Holi without any discrimination. From the king to the Fakir, everyone was seen in Holi.
