'Poonam Gupta' appointed as Deputy Governor of the Reserve Bank of India
New -Delhi, April 2 (IANS). The central government has appointed Poonam Gupta as the Deputy Governor of the Reserve Bank of India for a three -year period. She will replace Michael D. Patra, who retired from this important position in January this year. Just before the meeting of the Monetary Policy Committee held from April 7 to 9, the Cabinet’s appointment committee approved its name. He is currently the Director General of the National Council for Applied Economic Research. Gupta is also a member of the Prime Minister’s Economic Advisory Board and also a member of the Advisory Council of the 16th Finance Commission. He is also part of the Niti Aayog’s Development Advisory Committee and chaired the macro economy and the task force on trade during India’s G20 chairmanship. Poonam Gupta previously worked as chief economist in the World Bank. His career includes Professor of RBI to the National Institute of Public Finance and Policy (NIPFP) and works as a professor of the Indian Council for Research on International Economic Relations (ICRIER). Gupta holds the post of Board of NIPFP and Global Development Network (GDN). He is a member of the World Bank advisory groups on ‘poverty and equality’ and ‘World Development Report’. In Ncaer, Gupta led research on important sectors such as economic development, international financial system, central banking, comprehensive economic stability, public debt and state financing. Gupta holds a PhD and Masters degree in Economics at the University of Maryland, USA, as well as a master’s degree in economics at the Delhi School of Economics. He received the Exim Bank Award of 1998 for its doctoral work on international economy. The RBI has four deputy governors, two of whom serve the central bank. The third deputy governor is an economist who oversees the Department of Monetary Policy and an officer of the fourth commercial bank.
