AFFAIR ART DECO TO THE INDEIAL CLIMATE, CULTURE AND DESIGN | Mint

One of the more interesting stories we have this week is in the village of Dharmaj in Anand, Gujarat, which has more than 120 Art Deco buildings dating from the 1930s and ’40s – it is much for a town where about 11,000 people live even today. Many of these homes are in different states of decay, and with 2025 the 100th year of the Art Deco style of architecture – there are attempts to restore it, as Avantika Bhuyan reports. But the editing of Avantika’s story reminded me of the Chettinad region of Tamil Nadu, who allegedly has more than 10,000 dilapidated Art Deco houses, which were built and abandoned in the last century because the next generations or could not afford to pay for their maintenance. Keeping old properties up to date can be an expensive and time -consuming matter, and therefore many owners finally sell or redevelop these vast old homes or film theaters in more modern blocks. Over Thelast 20 years, many of the beautiful, peculiar, extensive and comforting old Art Deco buildings have disappeared from our city images. Urban enthusiasts may not be able to save the buildings themselves, but they do the next best thing – to take photos, track their history and post information about Art Deco buildings online in an effort to document it. For India, Art Deco is not just about buildings; It represents a moment of aspiration and cosmopolitanism in a country that was at the point of freedom. We also adapted the style, which originated in France, for our own climate, culture and customs, and added our own functions, motives and more. Read the story and look at the online projects we mentioned; You may just find a building or a memory of your childhood. In this centenary year of Art Deco, architects also have walks and talks and take people through neighborhoods where some of these houses still stand. The cover of Mint Lounge, dated May 24, 2025.
