Punjab's war on drugs: energy drinks prohibited in schools to tackle addiction | Today news
In a decisive step to protect students and fight addiction, Dr. Health Minister Balbir Singh on Monday announced a complete ban on energy drinks in schools across the state, reports India Today. The measure is part of the Bhagwant Mann-led government’s broader campaign to fight drug abuse and promote a healthy life among the youth. He spoke at a press conference in Mansa and emphasized that the consumption of energy drinks among schoolchildren could be an early gate for addictive behavior, and this ban is a preventative step to protect their future. The minister warned that strict action would be taken against all who were found that energy drinks to children in educational institutions. He repeated the government’s unwavering determination in his ‘War Against Drugs’ initiative, increasing the efforts to eliminate drug trafficking and addiction in Punjab. “The drug footers will not be spared. The administration and police are working together to catch drug smugglers,” Balbir Singh declared. The announcement comes in the wake of the Mann government’s aggressive steps to counteract the drug threat in Punjab. In March, the state forms a five-member committee of cabinet ministers to monitor the ongoing oppression. Police were instructed to identify drug hotspots, break down supply chains and take strict action against human traffickers. Singh also mentioned that properties belonging to drug dealers will be seized and demolished as part of the state’s zero tolerance approach. In addition to drug abuse measures, the minister talked about the government’s focus on food safety. He said efforts were being made to ensure the availability of pure milk, panel, sweets and other regularly consumed food items. “Those who provide quality food will be honored, while those who sell forged items will have strict punishment,” Balbir Singh said. The combined focus on school safety, anti-drug enforcement and food quality reflects the intention of the Punjab government to tackle health threats on various fronts. The ban on energy drinks in schools is a new addition to these efforts and underlines the government’s concern for the long -term impact of addictive substances on young students.
