A new disease threatens the lives of 25 million young people around the world – ryan
On April 8th, the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) admitted a new type of diabetes associated with malnutrition, not obesity.
This recognition by the Union comes after decades of clinical observations of the case that was first described in Jamaica in 1955.
According to the Independent newspaper for experts, this new type is known as the fifth type diabetes or the adult diabetes that affects the young, where it affects an estimated 25 million people around the world, most of whom are elderly youth in Asia and Africa who suffer from malnutrition and their body mass index is less than 19 kg/m2.
The experts explained that this type is radically different from the first and second types known of diabetes, as it arises from a defect in insulin secretion due to chronic malnutrition, and not because of obesity or lifestyle factors.
The lack of official recognition of this type for many years has led to his misfortune and treatment, as doctors usually made a mistake in diagnosing it as type 1 diabetes.
Dr. Meridith Hawkins, a professor of medicine at Albert Einstein College of Medicine, revealed that the excessive giving insulin to these patients may be fatal, noting that these patients usually do not live more than a year after diagnosis, noting that this disease is more common than tuberculosis and is close to the spread of AIDS
Professor Nihal Thomas of the Faculty of Medicine in India explains that this type of diabetes causes an imbalance in the functions of the beta -Benkerian cells, which leads to a lack of insulin secretion, noting that the lack of studies on this case due to the lack of official recognition of them has hindered diagnostic and treatment efforts.
