Where Is ‘The Virgin Suicides’ Cast Now? Where the Stars Are Today – ryan
It’s been 25 years since The Virgin Suicides — starring Kirsten Dunst and Josh Hartnett — first hit screens.
The film, written and directed by Sofia Coppola in her feature directorial debut, premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in 1999 before premiering in a limited number of theaters across the U.S. on April 21, 2000.
The Virgin Suicideswhich is based on a book of the same name by Jeffrey Eugenides, is set in 1970s Michigan and follows the five Lisbon sisters, whose Catholic parents are relentlessly strict and overprotective. One by one, each sister takes her own life, and the neighborhood boys whom they befriended in their adolescence are left to wrestle with the unspeakable tragedies.
“I think it was the beginning of me finding confidence as an adult,” Hartnett told Entertainment Weekly in 2020 of working on the movie. “It was a transformative experience for me, and I’ve always said if anyone cares to ask, it’s probably my favorite filming experience.”
Dunst added, “To be part of a movie that would be my favorite movie during that age … you couldn’t ask for more.”
Prior to being cast as Coppola’s lead, Dunst had already starred in two major Hollywood projects: Interview with the Vampire (1994) and Jumanji (1995). However, 2000 served as a major turning point for the actress, since The Virgin Suicides and Bring It On were released within mere months of each other.
As for Hartnett, one of his biggest roles to date was right around the corner with the premiere of Pearl Harbor in 2001.
