What does Yunus government want?
Ever since the command of the interim government came in the hands of Mohammad Yunus, Bangladesh has been trying to change its historical policy. Which includes an attempt to strengthen relations with Pakistan, which has been its rival i.e. a staunch enemy for a long time. But the new government is insisting on strengthening relations with Pakistan. For this, he has also imposed some condition.
Pakistan demands apology
Bangladesh has demanded Pakistan to formal apology for the massacres and atrocities made by his army during the 1971 liberation war. On Thursday, Bangladesh raised this issue loudly in the Foreign Secretary level talks held in Dhaka after 15 years. Along with this, Bangladesh also talked about resolving many old bilateral disputes, so that the relationship between the two countries can improve.
Demand for public apology from Pakistan for 1971 atrocities
Bangladesh Foreign Secretary Mohammad Jasim Uddin spoke to reporters after a meeting with Pakistan Foreign Secretary Aamna Baloch. He said, “We have demanded public apology from Pakistan for the 1971 atrocities. Also, out of the joint assets before 1971, he also spoke of a $ 4.3 billion share.” Jasim said that Pakistan has expressed his desire to continue the talks on these issues in future. The meeting was held at Padma State Guest House in Dhaka, where both sides also discussed improving business and relationships.
Atrocities in 1971 were created in Pakistan
In 1971, Bangladesh (then East Pakistan) became an independent country in 1971. At that time, the Pakistani army committed terrible atrocities on the Bengali people. Millions of people were killed, women were raped, and about one crore people came to India as refugees. India intervened in this war and on 16 December 1971 after the 13 -day war, the Pakistani Army surrendered. Bangladesh became independent with the help of India in this war. However, Pakistan never apologized for these atrocities.
Enmity with Pakistan?
Bangladesh not only demanded apology this time, but also raised some more old issues. These include the return of Bangladeshi citizens stranded in Pakistan, share of foreign aid for the 1970 cyclone, and money from the outstanding provident fund and savings schemes. Jasim Uddin said, “Relationships between the two countries cannot be strong without solving these issues.”
Pakistan got stuck?
Pakistani Foreign Secretary Amna Baloch met Bangladesh’s interim government chief professor Muhammad Yunus and Foreign Advisor Tauheed Hussain after the meeting. However, he did not say anything on the issue of forgiveness. Baloch only told that Pakistan is ready to talk on all issues. This meeting is also being seen as a preparation for the Dhaka Yatra of Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar to be held on 27-28 April.
Why is Pakistan not apologizing?
Last year, Younus asked Pakistani Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif to resolve these pending issues forever. However, Pakistan has so far denied forgiveness. Bangladesh believes that forgiveness is necessary to fill the 1971 wounds. This demand can make it difficult for Pakistan, because apology can be seen there as its defeat.
