'A Minecraft Movie' Brings Huge Success for Jack Black and Jason Momoa – ryan

A Minecraft Movie couldn’t have come along at a better time because the theater industry has been reeling in 2025. Certainly, the situation is expected to pick up when the summer movie season begins, thanks to titles like Superman and Jurassic World Rebirth, but Jason Momoa and Jack Black’s adaptation of the classic video game franchise got the ball — or voxel sphere in this case — rolling early. Minecraft opened at No. 1 with an estimated $157 million at the domestic box office, and the flick made almost as much money as the billion-dollar blockbuster Barbie ($162 million) did over its own opening weekend back in the summer of 2023! A Minecraft Movie also became the highest-grossing film of the year thus far in terms of its opening weekend numbers. Check out where director Jared Hess’ movie stacks up below:
Box Office: Best Opening-Weekend Numbers by 2025 Films (Domestic)
- A Minecraft Movie ($157 million)
- Captain America: Brave New World ($88.8 million)
- Snow White ($42.2 million)
- Dog Man ($36 million)
- Mickey 17 ($19 million)
Technically, Brave New World did make $100 million over its opening weekend, but it needed the Presidents’ Day holiday frame (4-day) to reach that highly coveted number, whereas A Minecraft Movie only needed three days to impressively break the $100 million barrier. The video game adaptation also fared well on the global stage with an additional take of $144.1 million internationally en route to a worldwide total of $301 million. The film, which also boasted the weekend’s best per-theater average with $36,829, has already doubled its $150 million production budget, and A Minecraft Movie is well on its way to turning a profit after just a few days of its early theatrical release.

Idaho siblings (Sebastian Hansen, Emma Myers) enter a cubed world with a former video game champion (Jason Momoa) and lost miner (Jack Black).
Critics might not have appreciated A Minecraft Movie (49% Tomatometer), but reactions from the fans on Rotten Tomatoes have resulted in the Momoa and Black-led film registering an impressive 87% Popcornmeter, formerly the RT audience score, against 2,500+ verified ratings posted already. Meanwhile, the adaptation of the video game saga received a “B+” CinemaScore. Judging from the fans’ grades and the film’s box office figures, it’s easy to see why A Minecraft Movie has become the first official financial blockbuster of 2025.
‘A Minecraft Movie’ Headlines Highest-Grossing Weekend of 2025
The 2025 box office has been a disappointing frame financially, but A Minecraft Movie not only claimed the top spot during its debut, it also broke the opening-weekend record for video game adaptations which was previously held by The Super Mario Bros. Movie. The Chris Pratt and Charlie Day-led animated adventure thrived over its own springtime opening weekend (April 2023) with a total of $146.4 million. The Super Mario Bros. Movie became a billion-dollar blockbuster worldwide ($1.35 billion) eventually, too.
Now, whether Jack Black (who also starred in The Super Mario Bros. Movie) and Jason Momoa’s team-up eventually joins the vaunted billion-dollar club at the worldwide box office remains to be seen. However, the adaptation does have plenty of promising financials on its side after only three days (four counting preview screenings) in cinemas. A Minecraft Movie not only opened at No. 1, and broke the Super Mario Bros. record, but the flick also headlined the highest-grossing weekend of the year thus far. Check out the numbers below:
2025 Box Office: Highest-Grossing Weekends (Domestic)
- April 4-6 ($195.5 million)
- Feb. 14-16 ($153.9 million)
- Jan. 3-5 ($103.8 million)
- Jan. 31-Feb. 2 ($85.4 million)
- Mar. 28-30 ($78.1 million)
Jason Statham’s A Working Man continued to pack a punch at No. 2 with another $7.3 million, while The Chosen: Last Supper Season 5 — Part Two debuted in the No. 3 spot at the box office with $6.7 million. The final installment of Season 5 (Part Three) will drop in theaters next on April 11. Meanwhile, Disney’s controversial live-action Snow White fell yet another 58% between its second and third weekends of release but still managed to check in at No. 4 with $6.1 million.
Unfortunately, the Rachel Zegler and Gal Gadot-led reimagining of the 1937 classic still has a long way to go just to reach the $200 million mark worldwide. Sadly, Snow White has only made $153.3 million at the time of this writing; The Woman in the Yard rounded out the Top 5 with $4.5 million. A Minecraft Movie should continue to reign over the box office and retain the No. 1 spot next weekend, too, because its only competition will be a handful of lower-profile titles. Rami Malek’s new film The Amateur, the thriller Drop, and A24’s Warfare all join the 2025 box office on April 11.
However, springtime will receive another much-needed financial injection from Michael B. Jordan and Ryan Coogler’s latest collaboration, Sinners, which opens in theaters on April 18. The supernatural horror flick is currently tracking to make $40 million or more domestically over its opening weekend, according to a report published by Deadline. Some long-range forecasts, though, even suggest Sinners could crack the $50 million barrier in the United States and Canada.
