Democratic Legislature of Melissa Hortman, Rep. Melissa Hortman, was killed on Saturday in what the US media described as a ‘politically motivated’ shooting. Hortman’s husband was also killed, while Sen. John Hoffman and his husband were also shot in their homes early Saturday. A person familiar with the case told the Associated Press that investigators believe the suspect was possibly a law enforcement officer. Minnesota Governor Tim Walz already has the death of Rep. Hortman confirmed in his latest statement. Police chief Mark Bruley told the suspect to flee through the back of Hortman’s house after a gunfire with police. The suspect was dressed like a uniform officer and drove a vehicle that “looked exactly like an SUV group car. It was equipped with light, emergency lights and looked exactly like a police vehicle,” Bruley said. Walz said the armed man went to the Hortmans home after he several times shot the senator John Hoffman and his wife from Champlin. Both John Hoffman and Melissa Hortman represent districts north of Minneapolis. Who was Rep. Melissa Hortman? Melissa Hortman was the top democratic leader in the state of Minnesota. Hortman, a member of the Minnesota Democratic-Farmer Labor Party (DFL), served as the House Speaker from 2019 to January 2025. The 55-year-old represented District 34B in the northern Twin Cities metropolitan area. The areas included the cities of Brooklyn Park, Champlin and Coon Rapids and parts of Anoka and hempin provinces. Hortman obtained her bachelor’s degrees in political science and philosophy at the University of Boston and a jurisproof doctor from the University of Minnesota Law School. Hortman, an advocate by profession, was elected to the Minnesota House of Representatives in 2004. She is married to her husband Mark Hortman, who was also confirmed that she was killed in the shooting. The couple had two children – Colin and Sophie. Donald Trump makes a statement about the incident, and US President Donald Trump said he was informed of the “terrible shooting that took place in Minnesota, which appears to be a targeted attack against state lawyers.” ‘Such horrible violence will not be tolerated in the United States of America.
