'It will have to be very strange': Andrew Garfield about his possible return to Spider-Man franchise

Washington DC [US]April 22 (Ani): Actor Andrew Garfield expressed his desire to return as a Spider-man in his fourth installment after surprised his fans in Spider-Man: No Way Home, Variety reports. At the Middle East Film & Comic con via entertainment tonight, as quoted by Variety, the actor said his return to the Spider-Man franchise depends on a very “ominous” idea, which will also require creative freedom from the writers. He remembers the example of “Spider -verse” films for it. “It will have to be very strange. I would like to do something very strange. Something very unique, ominous and surprising, similar to the creative freedom they have with the animated ‘Spider-Verse’ films,” Garfield said as quoted by Variety. According to the outlets, the two-time Oscar nominee said in an interview with Esquire Magazine last year that he “left” when his Spider-man role came to such a sudden end after ‘Amazing Spider-Man 2’ disappointed in the box office. Tom Holland took over the role with 2017’s ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’. But the success of ‘No Way Home’ has shown that there is still a lot of love for Garfield’s iteration of the comic book hero. Andrew was speculated as part of the franchise before the release of ‘No Way Home’ due to leaked photos and videos. However, he continued to deny his involvement to maintain the tension. It worked well because the film was a huge hit at the global box office due to unexpected comos of Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire as Spider-Man. Meanwhile, Tom Holland’s stars will start shooting next installment of Spiderman. Sony Pictures unveiled the title of the highly expected fourth installment of the Spider-Man franchise, with Tom Holland. The film, titled ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’, was released in theaters on July 31, 2026. According to the Hollywood Reporter, the announcement was made for the first time in Cinemacon on Monday, where director Daniel Cretton took the stage to express his excitement about the project. The title, ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’, refers to a 2008 comic book story that takes place to a universe-changing event that causes everyone to forget who Spider-Man is, reports the outlet that this plot is appropriate, given the end of ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’, which forgot the Peter Parker’s world. ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ is written by Erik Somers and Chris McKenna, who previously wrote ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’. Andrew Garfield is also speculated to make a como in the series by the fans. (Ani) first published: 22 Apr 2025, 02:18 PM IST
