What is a real ID? An actual ID is a state-raised driver’s license or ID card that meets the federal safety standards determined by the Real ID Act of 2005. These standards are based on a recommendation by the 9/11 Commission to improve identity verification nationwide. Real IDs can be recognized by the gold or black star on the upper part of the card. Improved driver’s licenses (EDLs) issued by states such as Washington, Michigan, Minnesota, New York and Vermont are also acceptable, even without the star. What documents should get one? The requirements may differ slightly according to the state, so travelers with their state’s licensing agency must go for complete guidance. Who is affected by the change? The rules apply to all American travelers 18 years and older. Children under 18 are not expected to show ID when traveling with an adult companion who has acceptable identification. What happens if you don’t have a real ID?
