#30daysrantchallenge: YRC asks for nationwide protest against Tinubu Govt, asks NLC, TUC to support mass action

The #30Daysrantchallenge, which began on March 16, was initiated by Ushie Rita Uguamaye, a member of the National Youth Service Corps (Nysc), who posted a video that could no longer maintain her monthly allowance of N33,000 in the contemporary economy. The Youth Rights Campaign (YRC) has asked for a nationwide protest amid the #30Daysrantchallenge, while asking the Nigerian Labor Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) to support the national action against the administration of the President Bola Tinubu. The YRC made the call while throwing its weight behind the viral #30daysrantchallenge, a social media movement powered by Nigerian youth to protest the worsening economic conditions and describing them as ‘anti-people’ policy of the president Tinubu-led administration. In a statement signed by the group’s national secretary, Francis Nwapa, the YRC applauded the boldness of Nigerian youths taken to social media to express their dissatisfaction, describing the challenge as “a step towards a better Nigeria.” “The #30daysrantchallenge shows that this generation refuses to betray its mission,” the statement says. “We will not abandon our country in search of greener pastures. This is our country, and we have to fight for it. ‘ The #30Daysrantchallenge, which began on March 16, was initiated by Ushie Rita Uguamaye, a member of the National Youth Service Corps (Nysc), who posted a video that could no longer maintain her monthly allowance of N33,000 in the contemporary economy. In her video, Uguamaye deprived the hard economic conditions and directly criticized President Tinubu and described him a ‘terrible’ president. Since then, the #30Daysrantchallenge has been traction nationwide, with thousands of youths expressing grievances over the increase in food and fuel prices, unaffordable housing, mass unemployment, electricity and data tariff increases, and a weakened living conditions, all of which have worsened by removing fuel subsidies and other reforms for the increase in fuel subsidies and other reforms. N77,000 can be the result of the increasing pressure of the #30Daysrantchallenge, and emphasizes that “if we struggle, we can win, but if we don’t, we are already losers.” However, the group also emphasized that the movement is deepening outside the online expressions of anger. “The next step should be a nationwide protest to put an end to all policies against people and for real change,” Nwapa said. “This includes living wages, job creation, reversal of tariff increases and proper funding of public services.” The YRC attributes the current hardship not only to the administration of President Tinubu, but to the broader capitalist economic framework, which, according to the majority, prioritizes the profits of some at the expense of the majority. It appeals to the formation of a mass worker class party on a socialist platform as a long-term solution. The group called on organized labor, especially the NLC and the TUC, to “wake up to their responsibility” and support the struggle. As a starting point, the YRC asked for a 48-hour general strike and nationwide mass rockes. “We are calling on Nigerian workers to join this challenge, and also the important task of drawing up a mass movement that can challenge the pro-capitalist policy of the Tinubu administration that brought mass to the working masses.” We call on the leadership of the Nigerian Labor Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) to raise their responsibility and support the agitation of the Nigerian masses. “As a first step, a 48-hour general strike and nationwide mass protests must be organized.” This is our struggle that needs to be sustained. We owe it to our generation and the next generation to come, ”Nwapa said.
