2 People Killed; Suspect ID’d as Phoenix Ikner

Law enforcement officials said at a Thursday afternoon press conference that two people were killed in the shooting. Six innocent people were injured, and the shooting suspect was also injured when he was shot by law enforcement.

According to authorities, the suspect is Phoenix Ikner, 20. Ikner is believed by law enforcement to be an FSU student, and is the son of a Leon County sheriff’s deputy. He had been “deeply embedded in the sheriff department’s community,” according to Leon County Sheriff Walter McNeil.

McNeil alleged Ikner used his mother’s gun in the killings.

The deceased people were not students at FSU, authorities said.

Witness Describes Shooter Emerging from Orange Hummer

FSU junior McKenzie Heeter told NBC that the gunman pulled up in an orange Hummer outside the student union, got out with a rifle and shot “in my direction.”

After missing, she said, “he goes back into his car and grabs a pistol, then he turns and shoots the lady in front of him.”

Heeter described him as a “normal college dude” in an orange T-shirt and khaki shorts, with light hair. “I ran back to my apartment as fast as I could,” she said.

The school sent its first alert about the shooting at 12:01 p.m. ET.

“An active shooter has been reported in the area of Student Union. Police are on scene or on the way,” the alert said. “Continue to seek shelter and await further instructions. Lock and stay away from all doors and windows and be prepared to take additional protective measures.”
