Mohammad Yunus and BNP leader Tariq Rahman met in London, discussion on the upcoming election

London, June 13 (IANS). Amid political instability in Bangladesh, Mohammad Yunus, the chief adviser of the caretaker, had a confidential meeting with the executive president of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) on Friday. The meeting was held during Younus’ visit to Britain. The meeting took place at a time when there were differences between political parties about the upcoming national election in Bangladesh. In a joint statement issued to the meeting, it is said that Tariq Rahman proposed to hold elections of Yunus before Ramadan of 2026. He also said that the President of the BNP, Khaleda Zia, also agrees with this opinion. In response, Younus made it clear that he held elections in the first two weeks of April 2026 to hold elections. However, he also said that if necessary preparations were completed on time, and then elections could be held a week before Ramadan began. For this, sufficient progress will be needed in improving and the legal system. It is noteworthy that it was the first private meeting between Tariq Rahman and Yunis in 2008 after his stay in London. Ramadan is likely to start mid -February next year. Meanwhile, by December 2025, the top leaders of BNP are constantly demanding elections. Tariq Rahman also repeated this question while addressing virtual events from London. Recently, in his Eid speech, Younus told the country: “I inform the countrymen that the next general election will be held in the first two weeks of April 2026.” He also said that the Electoral Commission will submit the election road map at the right time. However, this announcement of Yunus has been strongly criticized by many political parties of the country. Last week, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, general secretary of the BNP, told the media in Dhaka: “April is not suitable for the election. There is a possibility of heat, storm and rain and this time is directly after Ramadan. There are also students exams at this time.” -Ians DSC/EKD shares this story -tags
