Ackee is Jamaica’s National fruit but while its grows well in Jamaica and is a very popular fruit for Jamaicans. It’s not actually native to Jamaica, The place of its origin is actually the tropical forest of West Africa. Its able to grow well in Jamaica because of the similar climate is has with west Africa’s tropical forest. If not prepared properly, Ackee can be a very dangerous fruit. The only edible portion of the fruit is the yellow meaty part that is attached to the seed.
Everything else contains toxins of some sort that can be fatal to one’s health. It is very important that you wait until the fruit has naturally opened and ripped on the tree by it self. Never forcefully open the fruit, since it contains a very poisonous gas inside, that if consumed could lead to death. The only way for this poisonous gas can be release if is the fruit is opened naturally and released the toxin itself.
