This is a large sphodromantis mantis nymph, you can see the large wing buds on its body which grow with each moult until they become fully fledged wings of an adult. As soon as it clocks the movement of the cricket, it locks into its target. You will notice that it’s first reaction is to back off, this is because the cricket is quite large for it to take down and its giving itself time to decide to run or kill…. it can easily overcome this size prey but it doesn’t want to get hurt by a stray foot or a bite from its prey whilst it is eating it alive. In the second video you can see why it thought about killing the cricket as it puts up quite a fight and with all that movement of the prey in the wild, it actually makes it conspicuous to other possible predators like lizards etc… which could be the death of the mantis #mantis #cricket #insects #bugs #struggle #kill #overcome #fight #foodchain #food #quick #lightning #omg #wow #thedodo #lifeanddeath
