I have seen encounters like this on numerous occasions, & it does not always end the way you might imagine it too (….. 😬but sometimes it does)
Even thou these apex predators have teeth that are designed for meals just like this one, the turtles can hold their own by using their shell as a shield, swimming tight circles around the shark so they can’t close in on them, biting back & I have also seen turtles make it to shore, rest & re enter the water hopefully once the shark has lost interest.

#Repost @oceanskeepers with @repostsaveapp ・・・ 😱😡 This is the unfortunate and frustrating issue when it comes to fishing, you never know what you’ll catch. And in this case, these guy caught an IUCN Red List Endangered Mako Shark… that was eaten by something even larger.

Removing an apex predator like this from the ocean, whether it was on purpose or not, will send shockwaves down the entire food chain.

Sharks play an incredibly important role in the ocean’s ecosystem by maintaining the fish species below them in the food chain and serve as an indicator for the oceans’ health. They help remove the weak and the sick to prevent the spread of disease as well as keeping a healthy balance of competitors to ensure species diversity.

EDIT: it looks like these guys use longlines to catch smaller sharks and ‘accidentally’ caught this Mako which would have most likely drowned and was eaten buy other predators.
