The Congress may be inching towards a landslide win in Chhattisgarh, but its choice to replace the BJP’s Raman Singh as chief minister remains anybody’s guess. There are a few contenders for the top position, the foremost among them being Chhattisgarh Congress president Bhupesh Baghel. The 57-year-old politician, who credits his party’s good showing to its fight against the “anti-poor” policies of the Raman Singh government, claims he is ready to fulfil any responsibility that the Congress high command hands him.

The much-awaited assembly election results are out, and clearly it is advantage Congress. Posing a big threat to the Modi govt’s comeback bid in 2019 general election, Congress trounced the BJP 3-NIL in the battle for the Hindi heartland. In Chhattisgarh, the Congress decimated the BJP, winning two-thirds majority, while in Rajasthan the party is all set to form the government leading in at least 105 out of the total 199 seats. It is a cliffhanger in in Madhya Pradesh, where the Congress is leading in 117 seats ahead of BJP’s 103. In Telengana, it is a clean sweep by the TRS led by Chandrashekhar Rao, while the Congress surrendered its last bastion in the North-East region to NDA ally Mizo National Front. CP Joshi spoke about his controversial comment on “Brahmins are the best to understand Hinduism ” saying BJP propagated a 30 second clip from a 40 minute speech. On apologizing for the comment, Mr Joshi said as a true “Congress soldier” he did what his party leader asked him to. He also said the main aim is to win the 2019 polls and the high command will decide who will be the next chief minister.

Chhattisgarh Congress President Bhupesh Baghel says he was very confident of the party’s win in the state. He said post 2013 polls the party worked for the welfare of the people and were connected to the people and their issues and worked towards the benefit of women, tribal and other issues. He also says if he is handed the responsibility of being the chief minister of the state he will fulfill all responsibilities.

Assam’s Gaurav Gogoi said the Congress is quite confident that the party will win all three states of Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh and said they will build on these victories and build momentum. On asked if the Congress could have done better he said the party is satisfied and happy with the performance of workers and leaders and doesn’t want to get diverted by PM Modi’s rhetoric. On Mizoram loss, he says regional parties are gaining ground and it is not like the BJP won the state.

Rahul Gandhi, exulting in his Congress party’s state election wins today, said it was clear that Prime Minister Narendra Modi would find it very difficult to win elections. “Clearly, there is a feeling that PM Modi was unable to deliver what he committed,” the Congress president told reporters this evening. The Congress won in Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh and fought a close contest in Madhya Pradesh in the state elections billed widely as the semi-final, the last popularity test before the 2019 national elections. It lost Mizoram and failed to perform in Telangana but its wins in India’s heartland have overshadowed the setback.
