Restaurant review: Gough’s on Gough

There are many fine restaurants in Hong Kong. Gough’s on Gough, one of the newest additions to the city’s dining scene is, quite simply, fabulous. This is the first restaurant in the world to be opened by upmarket British furniture brand Timothy Oulton. Given that fact, it’s no surprise the interiors are an inspired mix of the bold and the whimsical. But what of the food? If British cuisine needs a PR makeover, it’s getting it at Gough’s on Gough. The modern menu presented by head chef Arron Rhodes puts to rest every stereotype of uninspiring fare.

On the night of our visit we went all out, opting for the nine-course Tasting Menu paired with wines (HK$1,428 per person). The menu began with a trio of starters with quirky names: Beef Pop Shots, PBC (Potatoes, Beans and Cheese) and English Seaside. What it translated to was a mod-Brit version of steak tartare, cheesy baked potato served on a bed of crunchy quinoa, and cockles presented on pebbles. The visual “wow” factor alone made this my favourite menu offering of the night.

From there, dish after dish continued to challenge expectations. Our favourites included langoustine with cauliflower, melon and tarragon, and a beautifully balanced dish of grass-fed beef, porcini shallot and potato. Our meal was then rounded off with two desserts evocative of an English summer – lychee, passionfruit, marscapone and gingerbread, and strawberry cream, honeycomb and lemon balm sweets.

Everything about this dining experience was next level, down to how beautifully plated each dish was to the attention to detail from the sommelier who appeared tableside to explain each flawless wine pairing. Gough’s on Gough has ushered in a new era of dining in Hong Kong. Rule Britannia!
